BURBANK — It was simple equation that explained the Hoover High girls' water polo team's 14-4 loss to Alemany in the Burbank High Tournament on Saturday — the more the Tornadoes' fatigue mounted up, the bigger the deficit got. Hoover Coach Ara Oganesyan said his team is having trouble maintaining its stamina throughout games at this point in the season and that showed itself to be true during Saturday's loss. "At first I thought it was inexperience and I thought, 'Alright, let's [get them playing]

Garrett Swart and Austin Frank will literally be central to the St. Francis High soccer team's success this season. From their position side by side in the center midfield, Swart, a senior, and Frank, a junior, are expected to form a dynamic duo capable of driving the Golden Knights back to the top of the Mission League and further into the CIF playoffs. "The center of our midfield with Austin and Garrett is going to be our strength," St. Francis High Coach Glen Appels says.

LA CRESCENTA — Neither the Crescenta Valley High girls' volleyball team, not that of Holy Family entered the playoff round of the 2010 Crescenta Valley Girls' Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday with a chance to win a Gold Division championship. But both squads approached their Silver Division berths as a chance to improve their late season form and end the two-day event on a better note than it began. Today was much better than yesterday," Crescenta Valley first-year Coach Steve Umemoto said on Saturday afternoon after his team had won its final two matches, including a 25-19, 25-15 win over John Marshall to clinch 11th place.

VALENCIA — It was Crescenta Valley High's football team that advanced to the second round of the College of the Canyons Passing Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. But as it related to the pair of local squads that took part in the tournament, it was Glendale, despite a first-round loss, which walked away satisfied with momentum in hand, while Crescenta Valley was clearly frustrated after a lackluster and lopsided 36-14 loss to Alemany ended its afternoon. "I'm disappointed in the game, but I'm happy with the tournament," said first-year Falcons Coach Paul Schilling, whose team went 4-2 overall in the three-day format, going 3-1 in pool play before defeating Golden Valley, 26-12, in the opening round of bracket play earlier Wednesday.

PASADENA — For a St. Francis High baseball squad that has lost seven games by one run, including four in Mission League play, Friday’s numbers were most assuredly a formula for a loss. The Golden Knights were held to one hit and committed six errors. But that one hit was a three-run triple by David Hubinger and those six errors were thwarted by a tenacious effort on the mound from Ethan Bramschreiber, who went the distance in St. Francis’ uncharacteristic 3-1 league win over Alemany on Friday at Jackie Robinson Field.

LOS ANGELES — As close and hard-fought as it was, the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy swimming team’s 90-86 defeat at the hands of defending Mission League champion Alemany at Loyola High on Thursday was a loss the Tologs could live with. “I’m thrilled [with the meet],” said first-year Tologs Coach Steve Bergen, whose team would have likely had a lead instead of a deficit entering the final event were it not for a disqualification in an earlier relay.

GIRLS’ SOCCER Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 0, Alemany 0 : The Tologs fell into a potentially disastrous scenario on Wednesday, as they tied on the road with Alemany (10-6-3, 0-5-3 in league) and, therefore, put their shot at winning a second straight Mission League title in jeopardy. Sacred Heart (15-1-3, 6-0-3 in league for 21 points) has one game left, against Louisville, and should it win would have 24 points. After defeating Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Wednesday, Harvard-Westlake (14-1-3, 6-1-1 for 19 points)
