The music and dance departments at Glendale Community College hold some of their most popular events in May and June. Music events include a performance by the college?s orchestra led by Beth Pflueger at 3 p.m. May 17 in the Auditorium. It will feature Copland?s ?Outdoor Overture? and other selections. General admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors. The same day, the Concert Singers, directed by Peter Green, will perform Poulenc?s ?Gloria? and other works at 7 p.m. at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Blvd.

Join the mayor, City Council members and staff, your friends and neighbors in playing the exciting new game "Let's Make A Budget" throughout January and February. Those attending the meetings will be provided with a list of city services and functions and will voice their opinions on how to allocate funds to maintain them over the next 10 years.

Gary Moskowitz Serine Ohanian has seen friends go through the pitfalls of contemplating suicide, but was there to help them get out of those slumps before it was too late. She knows sometimes, just making a new friend is all it takes. Serine and the other members of Hoover High School's Students Problem Identifying and Resolving it Together, or SPIRIT Council, on Saturday hosted a Youth Issues Solutions Summit at the school. We Care for Youth directors Linda Maxwell and Jose Quintanar are SPIRIT Council advisors and helped students coordinate the event, which drew about 200 students to the school.

Glendale Council PTA is working with First District PTA to support the three Juvenile Court and Community Schools in the area during their annual holiday community service project. All donations may be dropped off at the Glendale Council PTA Office, 223 N. Jackson St., Glendale, before Nov. 29 or given to your school’s PTA president. There are several ways the community can help. The public can contribute gift cards or items for a silent auction gift basket that will go to the boys’ camps.

Lately, I have been annoyed by solicitation phone calls, carefully scripted to imply -- but not actually state -- that the Glendale Police Department and the city's Water and Power Department are asking for my support, either in dollars or in buying a commercial product. These are efforts by crafty outsiders to indicate direct city impetus. Not so. The solicitors are taking advantage of loopholes in their tie-ins with those departments. The Glendale city government is well aware of State Senate Bill 771, which prohibits solicitation calls to those who, for a dollar a year, say they don't want them.
