GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes playing minor league baseball .   Jason Hirsh (St. Francis High, 2000) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees starting pitcher: Hirsh, a right-hander, made his debut with the Yankees’ triple-A affiliate Saturday after being acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies July 29. Hirsh struck out seven and scattered six hits in five innings to pick up the win in the Yankees’ 4-0 home victory against the Pawtucket Red Sox. He threw 54 of his 78 pitches for strikes in the second game of a doubleheader.

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level. Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Modesto Nuts: For the first time since 2004, the Nuts earned a trip to the California League Championship Series after they captured the league's North Division title by defeating San Jose in a best two-out-of-three series and taking down the Bakersfield Blaze in a three-out-of-five affair. Bergman, of course, had a big part to play in getting Modesto there.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Name: Freddy Sanchez Team: Boston Red Sox Local Ties: Glendale Community College, 1998 This Season: The Red Sox have benefited greatly since calling the utility infielder up May 31 from Pawtucket of the International League. Entering Tuesday's game against the host Chicago White Sox, the 25-year-old Sanchez was batting .267 in 10 games. He's four for 15 with two runs scored. Latest News: Sanchez has had several pinch hits, but he made a defensive impact Saturday in an 8-4 victory against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park.

Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Modesto Nuts: Bergman, a former All-Area Player of the Year, likely won't forget what he's accomplished this season with the Nuts, the class-A advanced affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Simply put, he's garnered impressive accolades. Bergman, who was selected as the California League Pitcher of the Year, was slated to start Wednesday's playoff game against the host San Jose Giants.

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level. Alonzo Gonzalez (Glendale Community College, 2012) Gulf Coast League Blue Jays pitcher: Gonzalez began his first professional winning streak Friday, as he recorded his second win in as many starts in the Gulf Coast Blue Jays' 7-3 victory over the Gulf Coast Pirates. The former Vaquero lasted five innings in which he gave up six hits and three runs. Gonzalez gave up two singles to start the third inning, but got out of trouble with two ground balls and when a runner was caught stealing second.
