Basil is a great big dog. His tail is almost as long as he is, and it knocks everything down when he walks past. He even knocks me down. Basil is a little strange though, he likes to chase shadows and tries to dig them up. He loves to go on walks. When I walk him he pulls me down the hill fast, you can't stop him but he is great for going up the hills. He is a good dog and is part of our family. I really love him, even when he stinks.

The envelopes have been opened and the Oscars awarded, but most of us are still catching up on the "must see" movies. Before or after a screening in La Cañada Flintridge, Café Sole is a great place to catch a bite. Nestled between a big-name coffee place and a cellphone store, expectations for this place might not be high, but the family-run restaurant offers value and variety in pleasant surroundings. They've been here 10 years, so they must be doing something right! The patio is inviting on warm days or evenings, and heaters provide warmth when the sun will not. The interior boasts about a dozen tables, in view of the kitchen's bustle and flame.

Eva Sippel, Enjoy! BURBANK -- When I walked into Roselli's Italian Kitchen in Burbank, I was reminded that they are best known for their scrumptious pizzas. They come in eclectic varieties like the Pesto Pizza ($9.95) made with a homemade pesto sauce, a choice of grilled chicken breast or baby shrimp, red onions, red bell peppers and mushrooms. For the more daring crowd, the Godfather Pizza ($9.95) is served with a unique white sauce made from olive oil, garlic and fresh basil.

Tep Thai in Glendale is a visual feast, as well as a treat for the palate. The stylish interior features polished concrete, high ceilings with teak beams and gleaming mirrors, making the small space feel bright and comfortable. Pendant lamps and retro upholstery fabrics add whimsical flair. Weighty cutlery and attractive porcelain dishes in varied shapes add to the upscale feel. While take-out is available, I prefer to dine in, taking advantage of the ambience. Service is very attentive (during one lunch visit, my beverage glass was topped up at least six times)

My computer is in the hospital undergoing major surgery, allowing me some unexpected leisure time to tackle tasks like reviewing my new recipe files. I uncovered a raft of summer meal suggestions I'd like to share with you. Next, week we'll visit a charming local family. The following week we'll go to a jewelry making party. This week, we'll put on our aprons and cook. Aug. 3 was National Watermelon Day. The watermelon originated in Africa. We Americans love the large oval red variety of melon that weighs up to 30 pounds.

It might be the heat or perhaps it's due to skimpy swimsuits, but summer usually means lighter eating. So the timing couldn't be better for the recent opening of the outstanding salad-and-smoothie restaurant, Malfi's in La Cañada. Named for the captivating Amalfi Coast in Italy, Malfi's is the new-and-improved incarnation of owner Mary Geyer's former smoothie spot Juice It Up, which was housed in the same location. At Malfi, the juice drinks are better and the salads are a stellar addition.

Die-hard New Yorkers are known for their immense pride in claiming that Manhattan has the best pizza, and that everything else is second-rate. Any transplants can make their way over to Johnnie’s New York Pizzeria & Caffé in Glendale for a taste of things the way they like them in the Big Apple. This is a franchise with locations around the Los Angeles area that recently took up residence in the Exchange location that formerly housed Jamba Juice. Based on the number of people who stopped to peek in the front window, many are still discovering this new arrival.
