Six Glendale teachers were among 220 Southern California teachers honored Thursday at a special beach party hosted by Gladstone's Malibu. Sam Levering, Jim Smiley and Scott Sund from Crescenta Valley High School and Carol Driffill, Mary Hazlett and Cathi Lander from Glendale High School were all honored at the eighth annual party hosted by Gladstone's Malibu. Students nominate teachers they think should be honored, said Christine Lloyd, a spokeswoman for Gladstone's.

Renowned Russian quintet to perform As part of the Newport Beach Arts Commission Concerts in the Park series, the Russian National Orchestra's Wind Quintet is scheduled to perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Corona del Mar's Grant Howald Park. Sergei Markov, the orchestra's chief executive officer, will join the quintet on stage to narrate "Wolf Tracks," a contemporary update to the classic tale of "Peter and the Wolf." The Russian National Orchestra's recording featuring "Peter and the Wolf" and "Wolf Tracks" has earned the group a Grammy.

Dr. Richard Weiss, a Newport-Balboa Rotarian and founder of the One World Sight Project, is sponsoring a conference for ophthalmologists, dermatologists, oculoplastic and plastic surgeons, optometrists, and registered nurses from Aug. 27 to 28 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Newport Beach. While that conference is going on, the public is invited to attend a beach party at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort on Aug. 27. It will include dinner, drinks and live entertainment.

It’s surf’s up for the Scriptures Children are invited to become surfers riding the wave of God’s love at the Church of the Lighted Window. The church is inviting children ages 4 to 12 years old to join in their Vacation Bible Sunday School called Beach Party: Surfin’ through the Scriptures. The events will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 20 and 27. A final celebration will be Aug. 3. Lessons will include Bible stories, songs, crafts, science activities and more.

Mastro's Steakhouse is one of the most popular social gathering spots in L.A.'s hip Westside. Last week, the upscale dining room debuted on the Orange Coast at a new Crystal Cove location. It's called Mastro's Ocean Club, and some 500 curious coasters poured in for a little opening night celebration. Executive chef Mark Lupino prepared a feast for the opening night crowd, serving an entire menu of selections, including steak and chops, and fresh seafood and shellfish.

To promote the upcoming Newport Beach Centennial kickoff party, a caravan of classic cars cruised the Coast Highway Sunday, attracting attention from pedestrians and motorists throughout the city. "Let's Do Launch," the beach party that will commence the city's year-long 100th birthday celebration, will feature music from the Beach Boys as well as games, food and all kinds of family fun. The party is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort.
