Thousands of “motor heads” braved the heat Sunday to gawk at rows of classic hot rods and chat with their proud owners during Montrose’s annual Fourth of July weekend block party. Temperatures that beat the 90-degree mark in some valley areas couldn’t keep die-hard fans of the loud and fast hot rods away as they hovered like bees from one polished car to the next along the 2300 and 2400 block of Honolulu Avenue. “I’m definitely a motor head, a poor motor head that can’t afford one these things, so this is great,” said Jeff Reien, who drove in from Burbank to dream and gaze.

Powell, who has called the Montecito Park area of northeast Glendale her home since 1939, was one of about 300 people Saturday to attend the 2003 Montecito Park Neighborhood Assn. block party. The neighborhood wanted to give back to the force for protecting its homes from the Verdugo Mountains fire in 2002. "We want to thank them for what they do for the community," said Becky Hinkle, a member of the group, which includes 120 houses in five city blocks centered around Brockmont Drive and Cumberland Road.

It was exciting to witness the recent re-birth of the Glendale fight scene. However, at the first big event, the Glendale Glory, I am sorry to say that the fighters were totally mismatched! Let’s hope a more balanced card can be achieved next time around. For example, the victory of Art Hovhannesyan, a talented fighter, over Daniel Gonzales was not exactly unanticipated. After all, Gonzales had a record of 9-22-4 with seven straight losses prior to his fight at the Glendale Glory.
