Edgar Melik-Stepanyan MONTROSE PARK -- Verdugo Major Baseball All-Star Coach Jeremy Camacho isn't a confident man. Before Monday's game against Tujunga he expected his team to lose in the second chance bracket game of the Little League District 16 Tournament. Verdugo proved Camacho wrong as it defeated Tujunga 11-3 at Montrose Park. "I didn't expect to win this game, our team came out hitting and Heather Brusokas pitched very well," said Camacho.

Charles Rich LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Somebody had to hit the high notes on the court while Ryan Facer attended choir practice Monday. In stepped Greg Gaudino, who recorded five aces, five blocks and six kills to help the La Canada High boys' volleyball team sweep its nonleague match against visiting Hoover, 15-4, 15-4, 15-11. Gaudino, who played middle blocker last season, started this season as an outside hitter. Then he passed his one-match career as a setter Monday with flying colors.

Erik Boal Jewish War Veterans' All-Star baseball Coach Len Marino said that his 9- and 10-year-old team had the horses to play with Crescenta Valley entering Wednesday's championship game of the Little League District 16 Tournament. And Marino relied on the right arm of his prized thoroughbred, Greg Astor, to back up his statement. Astor struck out 13 batters and limited CV to just three singles to lead JWV to a 7-4 victory at Babe Herman Field, which forced an if-necessary final at 5 p.m. today between the teams at the same location.

Erik Boal With just over two minutes left in Thursday night's showdown for the Rio Hondo League girls' basketball title, La Canada Coach Tamar Hill looked at assistant Kate Stein and said, "I'm having an 'I love this team' moment." And who could blame her? After all, who doesn't love perfection. Behind a combined 50 points from seniors Sarah Beattie, Jennifer Clary, Diahnn Futalan, Kasey Hurlbutt and Krissy Smith, the Spartans capped an undefeated run to the league title with a 62-43 victory against visiting Monrovia.

Hamlet Nalbandyan The Crescenta Valley girls' water polo team can take solace in the fact that it had just two less shots than Temple City on Saturday. Too bad for the Falcons that the final score wasn't that close. Facing the defending CIF Southern Section Division III-champion Rams, CV was defeated, 13-5, in a quarterfinal match at Pasadena City College. -- BOX SCORE -- -- Cres. Edgar Melik-Stepanyan They might get an at-large berth in the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs, but with a chance to control their postseason destiny, the members of the Flintridge Prep boys' soccer team had a short lapse that might prove to be detrimental down the line. The Rebels allowed two goals in less than 30 seconds Friday, losing to visiting Claremont Webb, 2-1, in their final Prep League match. "We let down for one minute," Rebel Coach Stephen Oderkirk said.

Charles Rich They played their best match of the season, and had nothing to show for the effort. About 12 quality shots taken by the members of the La Canada High girls' soccer team were stopped, and the host Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision to Monrovia in a Rio Hondo League match Friday. La Canada Coach Louie Bilowitz received some words of encouragement from counterpart Thomas Mann during the postgame handshakes. -- BOX SCORE -- -- Monrovia 0 2 -- 2 La Canada 0 1 -- 1 -- -- MONROVIA Kevorkian (Traci, 57th minute)

Hamlet Nalbandyan There were plenty of good excuses for Wednesday's setback, such as inexperience, lack of practice and questionable officiating. But the bottom line for the Glendale High girls' water polo team was that it still lost to a less-than-average team at its home pool, something that could cost the defending Pacific League-champion Nitros a playoff berth. Visiting Arcadia came back from a four-goal deficit to defeat Glendale, 13-10, in a league match.

Hamlet Nalbandyan Behind another gutsy effort, the Glendale High boys' basketball team knocked off one of the Pacific League's elite -- again. After defeating Muir on Tuesday for the first time in nine years, the Nitros toppled back-to-back league champion Pasadena, 60-51, Friday night at the Nitro gym in a Pacific League game. The Nitros (11-7, 2-1 in league) used a 13-4 advantage in the second quarter to defeat the Bulldogs (8-9, 1-2), who played the contest without 6-foot-8 center Tim Sutton, as the junior was unavailable because of disciplinary reasons.

Erik Boal The Crescenta Valley and Flintridge Prep girls' soccer teams scheduled Friday's nonleague match to prepare them for crucial stretches upcoming in their respective leagues. But as a result of a hard collision in the 51st minute between CV junior Rachael Rigamat and Rebel freshman goalkeeper Ayana Sumiyasu, two of the area's best players almost didn't survive to help their teams next week. Thanks to two second-half goals, CV defeated Flintridge Prep, 3-1, at the Glendale Sports Complex, but the result was almost of secondary concern for Falcon Coach Andrea Otero and Rebel Coach Tim Morphy after having to attend to their respective players, who were fortunate to survive the impact with just bruises.
