Grant Gordon One inning. One error, two hit batsmen and two passed balls. Three hits and four walks. Thirteen at-bats and nine runs scored. One inning, one game over. Such was the brief storyline of Tuesday afternoon's American Division game at the 40th annual Babe Herman Tournament as the Tesoro High of Las Flores baseball team pounced on Hoover early en route to an abbreviated 15-2 victory that ended after 4 1/2 innings via the mercy rule.

Grant Gordon That clutch hit came just once for the Flintridge Prep baseball team, and once wasn't nearly enough. The Rebels stranded six baserunners -- five in scoring position -- as they dropped their Prep League opener to visiting Rio Hondo Prep, 4-1, on Saturday night at the Glendale Sports Complex. Much of Flintridge Prep's difficulty at the plate no doubt came in the form of the gem twirled by Kares' starter Thom Bragger, who tossed a complete-game four-hitter.

Grant Gordon It took just one swing for Crescenta Valley High's Lauren Strangis to erase the ills of one bad pitch. Consequently, it took just one Strangis swing to ruin a previously stupendous day for Burbank High's Jillian Shafer. Strangis doubled under the outstretched glove of Burbank leftfielder Veronica De Los Santos in the bottom of the seventh inning to score two runs -- including the game-winner -- as Strangis and Crescenta Valley walked off with a 3-2 nonleague victory Thursday at Crescenta Valley High.

Grant Gordon Two innings of calamity erased five innings of magnificence. Such was the case on Tuesday as Glendale High pitcher Jesse Meaux and the Nitros flirted with a seemingly improbable upset for five innings only to have it all come crashing down in the final two. Charles Rich Hitting hasn't been a strong asset for the Hoover High softball team of late. It didn't take long for Hoover Coach Julie Hoppe to make the correct analysis after Hoover dropped a 2-0 Pacific League decision to visiting Arcadia on Tuesday. Hoover managed just one hit -- an infield single in the third inning by Catie Rohrig. Charles Rich Hard-hit grounders found their way up the middle, aggravating La Canada High softball pitcher Dani Mahrer. Almost every time Mahrer delivered a pitch, South Pasadena took an aggressive approach to hitting. Mahrer could be forgiven if she required a neck brace after quickly turning her head around to watch the balls reach the outfield. Mahrer and her teammates had a long afternoon, giving up 14 hits en route to a 6-2 Rio Hondo League home loss to South Pasadena on Friday.

But when the dust settled against perennial-power Arcadia, the Tornadoes fittingly came up way short on their own field.
