A mix of educators, businesspeople, law enforcement officials and other community members raced through questions about junk mail, the solar system and other fun facts Wednesday during the 21st annual Smart-A-Thon fundraiser. Organizers hoped the event, at the Verdugo Hills Hospital, would generate about $4,000 to go toward an endowment fund that supports educational programs in Glendale, La Crescenta and La Cañada Flintridge. Money from previous Smart-A-Thons helped pay for grants to 14 organizations this year, including nine schools and two libraries.

More comedic, trick question-laced trivia than Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit, the annual fundraising event invites teams of four to tackle a 68-question quiz for the chance to win small prizes and, by paying a $30 admission fee and bidding in a silent auction, help raise funds for the chamber?

GLENDALE — A 27-year-old Eagle Rock woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder after police said she caused head injuries to her 20-month-old baby that have doctors keeping the child alive artificially. Huddled around a game board at the Girl Scouts clubhouse Wednesday night in Montrose, a team of 10 girls watched as the robot they had built from Lego pieces rolled onto the playing field and started doing what they had programmed it to do. There was a collective cry of consternation when the wheeled Lego robot failed to pick up three Lego corn pieces, and a group cheer when the robot placed the Lego hydro-dam properly over the game-board river...
