Years of training have all come down to one race for Andrea Kropp at the 2012 U.S. Swimming Team Trials. While the 2010 Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduate has performed well in each of her other two events leading up to Friday, it was always about the 200-meter breaststroke in the mind of the Olympic hopeful. Those hopes are still very much alive after Kropp placed in the top three in both Friday morning's preliminary heat and the evening semifinal swim that advanced her to tonight's finals at CenturyLink Center in Omaha.

Charles Rich and Erik Boal It's a tradition for the Crescenta Valley High boys' swim team to make a large splash at the CIF Southern Section Division II final. Since their offseason move to Division I, that splash was reduced Wednesday to a ripple during the division prelims at Long Beach Belmont Plaza. Junior Peter Lee clocked 1 minute 78 seconds to finish eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke and qualify for the final, which will be held at 6 p.m. Friday.

Ranging in age from 5 to 17, these dedicated swimmers, coached by Sean Kang and assistants Orrie and Richard Hamilton, won praise from rival coaches and cheers from their proud parents and teammates as they ended the 2003-2004 YMCA season with a stellar effort.

The way Christian Lawrence saw it, there weren't going to be any errors. A year after the La Cañada High boys' swim team had its CIF Southern Section Division II championship stripped for using an ineligible swimmer, Lawrence made sure the Spartans would take care of business in 2006. The Spartans did so in fine form, culminating with the program's first CIF crown on May 13 at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza pool. Lawrence played a large role in helping La Cañada reach its apex with a division-record 329 points.

Success on the high school swimming scene came quicker than expected for Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy's Kirsten Vose. An impressive freshman season highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2012 CIF Southern Section Division I finals certainly raised the stakes for Vose diving into her sophomore season. Vose, a La Crescenta resident, responded by not losing a single race leading into CIF in 2013. She certainly raised the stakes even further when she posted the best times in the Division I prelims in the both the breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

The top-10 individual performances by an athlete in a team setting from the 2012-13 season were voted on by the Glendale News-Press sports staff. 1 Young Tae Seo closes out a banner career on May 11 - The CIF Southern Section Division II Swimming Finals proved to be an ultimately bittersweet day for the senior, who capped a brilliant career. On one hand, defending divisional champion Crescenta Valley High lost its title to Los Osos, 285-234, at Riverside Community College on May 11. Yet, the team effort did not overshadow what was an ultimately stellar individual effort for Seo. The Naval Academy-bound senior still set two divisional records that day, the first when he rallied from a deficit midway through the 200-yard medley versus top-seeded Daniel McArthur of Lakewood.

As the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials closed on their third day, it's become clear that Andrea Kropp has developed a taste for night swimming. That's where the main action happens, as swimmers aim to advance from morning preliminary heats into semifinal and final heats in their respective events under the lights at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. On Tuesday, Kropp, in her second trip to the trials after debuting in 2008, advanced to her first-ever evening swim in the 100-meter breaststroke and on Wednesday, the 2010 Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduate accomplished the same feat in the 200-individual medley.

Whether chasing a CIF Southern Section divisional team title like the Crescenta Valley High boys, an individual crown like Glendale's Mickey Mowry or somewhere in between like Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, today and Friday's divisional preliminaries at Riverside Aquatics Center can't be overlooked. That's where seeds are established and cuts are made with a top-20 finish in each heat required just to advance to Saturdays finals at the same venue and a top-10 finish needed in order to compete for big points and individual titles.

VALLEY GLEN - While the Mission League team swimming championship won by Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy was built on depth and strategy, Tuesday's league finals were all about speed. The Tologs showed they had plenty to burn at Los Angeles Valley College in the non-scored final meet that determined individual championships by event for individuals and relay squads. Sacred Heart won five total titles on the day, including two individual crowns won by freshman Kirsten Vose in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

LOS ANGELES - With just four events remaining in Tuesday's Mission League double-dual meet, the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy swimming team's grip on the league championship was loosening. Defending-champion Alemany, which entered the meet at Loyola High as the last undefeated squad in league besides the Tologs, had closed a double-digit lead down to five points after Sacred Heart was shut out of the top two spots in the 500-yard freestyle. No one had seen the Tologs' best yet, it turned out, as Sacred Heart swept the final four events to quickly remove all doubt about who now holds the crown.
