Kelly Blatz is living his dream of becoming an action hero, and landing the lead role on a new Disney station — Disney XD — makes it that much sweeter. The 21-year-old Burbank native plays Charlie Landers in the new show “Aaron Stone.” Landers is a video game world champion whose expertise lands him a job as a secret agent. Now he must fight crime while learning to use all the nifty top-secret gadgets in between keeping up his school work and home life.

DEAL - MALOUF Kelly M. Deal and Ken C. Malouf, an employee of Nestle USA in Glendale, have announced their engagement. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Merrill and Marilyn Deal of Burbank. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1992. She received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with an emphasis in human resources from Cal State Long Beach in 1997. She is employed as a human resources professional for Corporate Express and Langner Security in Los Angeles.

The Sokol family’s fifth generation has been added to the family tree following the recent birth of Jazmine Ortiz. Leonard and Eva Sokol moved into their Burbank home in December 1947, where Eva still lives. Eva was a wife, homemaker and mother to two daughters. She also worked for Bank of America, Burbank Main branch before retiring with 20 years of service. Her oldest daughter, Patti Smith, is a graduate of Burbank High School. For the past 25 years, Smith has been employed by an HVAC mechanical contractor in Glendale.

The death Tuesday night of a Burbank High School football player has been a ruled a suicide. Matthew Smyser, a 17-year-old junior, died at his home in Shadow Hills Tuesday night. Los Angeles County coroner's officials on Thursday confirmed the official cause of death as suicide following an autopsy. Burbank Unified officials were notified of the death Wednesday morning by members of the Los Angeles Mayor's Crisis Response Team, and a school-wide announcement was made a short time later.

John Thomas, 63, of Burbank passed away from cancer on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. John was born January 7, 1950 in Mercer, PA. He moved with his family to Burbank in 1956. He attended Emerson, John Muir and graduated Burbank High School with the Class of 1968. It was at Burbank High School where he met classmate, Sallie Shelton Thomas, they were married in September 1969. In addition to his wife, Sallie he is survived by sons Kory of Ojai, CA and Toby of San Francisco, CA. He leaves behind his siblings Linda Mays of Greenville, PA, Lee of Stanwood, WA, Raymond of Escondido, CA, Patrick of Sun Valley, Howard of Oak View, CA, Mildred Elliott of Maiden NC and May Pierce of Palo Verde, CA. John worked at Lockheed for over 38 years and retired in 2007.

Marine Corps Pvt. Robert A. Porter, son of Terri Dickens of Lompoc and William A. Porter of Burbank, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. He is a 1999 graduate of Cabrillo High School in Lompoc. Army Pvt. Steven A. Lupercio, son of Debbie Butler and stepson of Gerald Butler of Burbank, has graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is a 2000 graduate of Burbank High School. Army Pvt. Joe N. Boucher, son of Joe N. Boucher of Idaho and Linda Bitto of Burbank, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

PETERS -- SPOHR Jennifer Peters and Jason Spohr of Burbank were married at the Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. Pastor Tony Silvestri presided. Jennifer Thompson was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Melissa Kuhn, Gretchen Amerongen, Veronica McCune, Jessica Clark, Beth Kirkley and Shari Judson. The best man was Ryan Spohr. Groomsmen were Jim Biro, Pat Peters, Ted Braxhoofden, Steve Hacker, Mike Kemp and JP Ruggiero. A reception followed in the Lakeside banquet hall and the couple honeymooned in San Francisco and St. Lucia.

Dorothy Mae (Chamness) Henry passed away on March 30, 2014 after a long 8 year battle with Dementia / Alzheimer's.  She was born on July 10, 1934 to Raymond and Olive Chamness and raised in Burbank, CA with her late older sister Marcia (Chamness) Fochler.   Dorothy attended Burbank schools, including Miller Elementary, John Muir Jr. High, and Burbank High School where she graduated in 1952.  She went on to Glendale Jr. College and then Cal State LA to earn a teaching degree.  She began her 41 year Burbank teaching career at Central (Disney)

The artistic talents of three high school students will gain plenty of exposure in the coming months as their winning banner designs will be enlarged and hung from the Bob Hope Airport terminal tower. Senior Daniel Lee from Crescenta Valley High, freshman Angus Crosby from Burbank High School and sophomore Chance Woods from Pasadena High School each placed first in their school districts for the airport's 2014 Tower Banner Student Art Contest, and will have 16-by-25-foot versions of their designs on display on a three-month rotation.

Detectives are seeking information in connection with a robbery Tuesday near a Glendale motel, where a 26-year-old man was reportedly accosted by a machete-wielding man. A senior-facility operator wants a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to let it collect money from a future sale of Twelve Oaks Lodge - the surprise closure of which caused controversy late last year - according to court documents filed last Friday.

David Gomez passed away on December 19, 2013, after a long and hard fought battle with Diabetes. Born in El Paso, Texas on August 18, 1939, he moved with his family to Burbank, California in 1941. He attended Burbank High School, and after graduation, enlisted in the US Army and served as an 82nd Airborne Division Para Trooper. Upon his return from the Army, he obtained a degree from LATrade Tech and worked at Gray Bar Electric for a few years, until finally finding his place with Berg Electric as a Project Manager for 30+ years until his retirement.

Douglas L Humphrey, 65, of Baldwin Lake passed away Tuesday at Bear Valley Community Hospital. Mr Humphrey was born and raised in Burbank, graduating from Burbank High School in 1966. Mr Humphrey has been a resident of Baldwin Lake since 1982. He was a Young Antiques Dealer for 45 years and helped create the Burbank Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Linda Schutte; 2 sons Wayne Riepe of Baldwin Lake and Nick Riepe of San Bernardino; a sister, Ellen Russell of Kamloops, Canada, and 5 grand.

William G. Montenegro, 60, of Burbank, California, passed away on August 13, 2013 in his home after a long battle of cancer. William was born in Costa Rica on February 18, 1953. He graduated from Burbank High School. He enjoyed a long, passionate career at Warner Brothers (Motion Pictures); but most of all, he lived an active and very social life, cherishing his time and experiences with his friends and family. William is survived by his wife, Jing; mother, Jeannette; father, Herminio; sisters, Jenny Mattox and Maritza Amaro; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Our beloved father and grandfather, James Lark, OD, passed away peacefully from pneumonia on June 19, 2013 in Laguna Hills, California. He was born October 7, 1927 in Denver, Colorado to Emil Skrivanek and Virginia Schutte Lark. An only child, he moved with his parents to Burbank, California in 1934. He was a graduate of Burbank High School, where he served as student-body president, class of 1945. He studied at Occidental College and Stanford University, and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry.

A memorial service will be held for James K. Gordon (Jim) on Sat. May 18 at Pierce Brothers Valhalla at 4:00p.m. Jim passed away in Eufaula, Alabama on Nov. 18, 2012 with his wife by his side. Jim lived in Burbank for most of his life. He attended McKinley Elementary, Jordan Jr. High and Burbank High School. He was active in Burbank politics and served on the Burbank Airport Commission. As a young man Jim was employed by Borrmann Steel Co. He later opened his own company, American Metal Marketing.
