“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” — Henry Ford   Everyone came together last weekend for the Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society. It was a great weekend with a preliminary amount of over $100,000 in donations raised to help find a cure for cancer and to assist those who are dealing with it. Many people worked together; however keeping together is what makes progress, so please mark your calendars now for the third weekend in May 2010 to get involved.

While it would be impossible to describe in this column what they all do, you can experience for yourself the diverse businesses participating in this year’s Business Expo, which takes place from 5-8 p.m. next Wednesday at Verdugo Hills Hospital. However, here’s a little preview. As you travel down the aisles, you will notice the abundance of info from Edison and the Water District. Weather the way it is, they could give you some very helpful hints for free. For those of you wondering where your service vehicles travel to, or what’s going on when you’re not at the office, check out Sintel Systems.

Well, here we are at the last three-day weekend of the summer. Wow, summer went by fast, like it always does (more so as I get older). I love summer, going to the beach, barbecuing and sunshine every day; it’s the best! Whatever you do over the Labor Day weekend, relax, enjoy, have fun and be safe. A big “thank you” to the Dunaway Group at Broadview Realty for providing a delicious breakfast at our August board meeting. It was so gracious of you and we really appreciated it. Free admission: Attend the Foothills Community Business Expo on Wednesday, Sept.

Congratulations to Cal National Bank and Manager Ira Hart on a great re-location grand opening ceremony on Nov. 29. Food was superb; entertainment was superb, and those attending were well rewarded. Entertainment included the group Clean Slate (who plays quite often at Leo's All Star Sports Bar) and the Jazz Band from Crescenta Valley High School directed by Matt Schick (who received a $500 donation from Cal National). Ralphs and Baja Fresh selections were accompanied by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

In the city's landscape of nonprofits, there are fundraisers, and then there is Bras For A Cause. The fourth annual event, put on by the Soroptimist International Club of Glendale, drew more than 300 people Saturday evening at Oakmont Country Club who bid on and ogled 43 personally designed bras for the club's biggest fundraiser of the year. "Every year I'm just amazed," event organizer Kathy Lefkovits said. So were most people. This year's movie theme bore a myriad of wildly decorated bras, from the "Reel Support Bra" featuring two movie reels as each cup, to "The Queen," a bra submitted by the Soroptimist Club of Burnley, England, that sported a clipped British flag pasted to its frame in reference to its namesake movie released last year.
