Soccer team to hold car wash The AYSO Region 88 girls’ under-19 team will conduct a car wash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 7950 Foothill Blvd., Sunland. The cost is $5 per car. Proceeds will go toward the squad competing in the Florida National Games. Information on the 2010 National Games can be found at www.ayso.org/events/national_games.aspx. Fan appreciation night set The Crescenta Valley High baseball team will hold its fan appreciation night at 7 p.m. May 14, when the Falcons meet rival Arcadia in a Pacific League contest at Stengel Field.

Patrece Otero remembers when the Glendale Unified School District used to give her $200 a year to buy classroom supplies for her 20 or so students at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School. This year, Otero received $100 for her 36 students. That's one reason Otero sat at a table outside the Franklin Elementary auditorium Saturday afternoon, selling homemade desserts to raise funds for the Benjamin Franklin Elementary Foundation during the Yard Sale Palooza. Bargain hunters found an auditorium full of clothing, appliances and toys, fresh tacos made by Franklin Elementary parents and a car wash staffed by sixth-graders seeking support for their upcoming field trip to Catalina.

Democratic Club changes name The La Cañada Flintridge Democratic Club has voted to change its name to Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club. The Club has 25% of its members from La Crescenta. The Club will expand the area in which it conducts Get Out The Vote activities to include both La Cañada and La Crescenta. Jackson Bell Doctors at Glendale Adventist Medical Center got their cars spiffed by hand Wednesday in the hospital parking lot. But the car washers were neither neighborhood kids looking to make a buck nor high school band members raising money for their next competition. They were a group of thankful hospital directors and administrators, including president and chief executive Scott Reiner. "I'm doing this because I'm personally appreciative of the medical staff and want to show my support," Reiner said.

Darleene Barrientos Appreciation can come in the form of free lunch or a massage, but for administrators at Verdugo Hills Hospital on Thursday it meant washing their workers' cars during National Hospital Week. Verdugo Hills CEO Len LaBella was clad in shorts and tennis shoes to dry cars after they were washed that day. LaBella, along with several of the hospital's supervisors and managers, scrubbed their way through the line of workers waiting in line to have their cars cleaned.

GLENDALE ? Allegations of embezzlement have gripped a local youth football and cheerleading group that may have to cancel its 2008 season without at least $30,000 in missing funds. According to leaders of the Glendale Bears Youth Football and Cheerleading organization, the organization?s treasurer left town with the group?s entire budget ? estimated to be between $30,000 and $32,000 ? in her personal banking account. The future of their 2008 season, which was set begin Sept.

As thousands of fans strolled along Magnolia Boulevard in front rows of polished automobiles Saturday afternoon, it was hard not to notice the grins on the faces of the event's organizers. Fresh off the heels of Glendale's well-established Cruise Night, the still-young Magnolia Park Business Improvement District entered the car-show fray with its own "Be-Boppin' in the Park" Saturday as a means to a fruitful end for their business-lined street. Magnolia Park officials have been using the new muscle of their business improvement district ?
