Carol Lewis is inspired to dedicate her time to local and global organizations, she said, because the people she encounters when volunteering are always cheerful, no matter how underprivileged they may be. Lewis, who is also an author and poet, has been volunteering at Verdugo Hills Hospital for five years. She is a member of the Volunteer Messenger Pool, where she works with various departments gives patients and visitors information and assistance. As a former cardiopulmonary technician of 17 years, the Connecticut native said she felt inclined to volunteer at the local hospital when she moved to La Crescenta.

Jackson Bell John Bresee walked down to the closed-off parking lot of his office building Wednesday searching for a little time away from his desk and a quick bite to eat. The tax accountant found hot dogs, chips and soda at the Internal Building Safety Fair. But, more important, he learned disaster-safety tips and was reassured that his high-rise office building at 611 N. Brand Blvd. is in good hands. "It seems like everyone is making a strong effort to keep this building safe for me," Bresee said of the public-safety agencies in charge of protecting his office in the Glendale Center.
