Hundreds of people crowded the Americana at Brand on Thursday to view the second annual Christmas Tree Lighting and fireworks display. The event features acts like OneRepublic and Drew Seeley, with appearances by Dora the Explorer, magicians and Christmas tunes sang by a choir accompanied by a full orchestra. The 110-foot-tall tree was decorated with 10,000 lights and 15,000 ornaments, according to Caruso Affiliated, which owns the Americana. Caruso Affiliated and city officials this year took extra steps to notify residents of the fireworks display after some complained last year that they were caught off guard.

DOWNTOWN ? The Americana at Brand has sent free one-day valet parking vouchers to non-Glendale residents in an effort to draw more area consumers to the shopping center during the holiday season, an executive said. Although the Americana has become well-known in Glendale, many shoppers outside of the city are unaware of the massive retail and residential complex, said Jennifer Gordon, vice president of Caruso Affiliated. The hope is that the valet parking offer can inspire more consumers to choose the Americana for their shopping needs, Gordon said.

CITY HALL — The City Council on Tuesday directed officials to craft a plan that could grant the Americana at Brand and Glendale Galleria permission to place billboard-sized ads on their exteriors, even as Glendale has worked to eradicate large signs from its streets. Council members had mixed views on plans submitted jointly by the two massive shopping centers, with some questioning the motives behind the signs and others contending that the ads could be a part of the city’s long-term vision and evolution into a growing commercial center.

DOWNTOWN — Crews worked in delicate choreography early Wednesday to load a 110-foot Christmas tree into the Americana at Brand square nearly two months before the actual holiday. The early setup, which involved a 170-ton crane, will set the stage for the Americana to begin arrangements for its holiday festivities, including fake snow showers, visits from Santa Claus and a tree-lighting show Nov. 19. It also brings the atmosphere of a December holiday into the shopping center at a time that shoppers may find unusually early, said Brian Connett, professor of marketing at the Cal State Northridge College of Business and Economics.

CITY HALL — A potential battle with Caruso Affiliated over a proposed farmers market at the Americana at Brand has been averted, with city officials reporting that they intend to sign off on a compromise application from the developer to hold the weekly event on Saturdays. Developer Rick Caruso initially proposed his “European-style” farmers market at the Americana for Sunday, but that riled the organizers of the Montrose Harvest Market, which already operates each Sunday.
