Art bought at campus provides lasting enjoyment My first full-time teaching job was in Mesa, Ariz., in 1972. That year, I purchased some vases, pitchers and bowls at the student ceramics sale. Since moving to Glendale in 1980, I have purchased several items at student ceramics sales over the years at Glendale Community College. As I recently embarked upon spring cleaning, arranging utilitarian and decorative items, it occurred to me that many pieces that I prominently display are from these student sales.

Garcia and her fellow-students in the Ceramics Club at Glendale High School dedicated their Friday afternoon to painting jewelry pieces shaped out of clay. The first thing you'll notice about painter Jenna Ronnquist's La Crescenta home is its neatness. On one wall sits a television. Much of the wall is bare. Another wall contains a firelace with pictures of family on the mantle. The wall is dotted by a college degree and other pictures. Ronnquist's workplace is also neat. The table is placed in such a way that the artist has a view of the backyard. A paintbrush holder with rows of clean paintbrushes sits to the left, a ceramic dog food bowl is on the table.

The Southern California wildfires of 2007 and 2009 are a distant memory for most, but an organization that emerged from the devastation is alive and kicking. ART from the ashes, a Glendale-based cooperative of artists and volunteers that creates artworks out of the detritus of natural disasters, recently hosted a pop-up restaurant and exhibit, Comida Y Arte, in the ultra-cool Wine Vault on Brand. The food was tasty, the artwork tastier. And for another month, you can sample the art for yourself.
