Alex Coolman CITY HALL -- Glendale's Government Access channel 6 will air an "Issues and People" program tonight on the subject of Glendale schools. The program, which will be cablecast live from 7 to 8 p.m., will be hosted by City Councilman Rafi Manoukian. Manoukian will speak with several guests, including Crescenta Valley High School Associated Student Body President Brian Landisi and Clark Magnet High School Seeds of Peace Steering Committee member Rosa Navas.

Buck Wargo CITY HALL -- The Glendale City Council will get its say tonight on a new contract for police officers. The council is expected to approve a four-year deal that would give officers and sergeants a 12% increase in pay and benefits over the first three years. A four-year increase would be based on a cost-of-living increase as determined by the rate of inflation. Police have already approved the contract. The council meeting will start at 6 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall, 613 E. Broadway.

Buck Wargo GLENDALE -- Charter Communications has joined with Music Television for a voter registration drive at the Glendale Community College. The voter drive starts today and runs through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the San Gabriel Plaza at the college, 1500 N. Verdugo Road. Charter and MTV will also have a voter drive at the Burbank Media Center, 201 E. Magnolia Blvd., on Saturday and Sunday. The sign up will be on the first floor in front of Macy's between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. As a sweepstakes incentive to encourage voter registration, Charter is presenting a $500 Media Center gift certificate, 100 MTV caps and 100 MTV T-shirts.

For local cable subscribers with an interest in public affairs, Charter Communications recently brought an unpleasant surprise. The company took away full-time broadcasts of C-SPAN2, the network that provides full coverage of the U.S. Senate and other vital programming. C-SPAN2 now airs part-time, sharing a channel with a menagerie of other offerings. Charter is not fulfilling its civic responsibility to the people of Glendale. While most cities and cable systems are adding more public-affairs programming, Charter is going in the wrong direction.

Tim Willert DOWNTOWN -- Iva Carrico, whose disparaging remarks about Armenians have drawn harsh criticism from many residents, city officials and community groups, will appear on tonight's episode of the "Larry Zarian Forum." Speaking at the April 2 City Council meeting, Carrico, a longtime Glendale resident and community activist, called Armenians who have moved to the city "evildoers" who are "intent on destroying Glendale." Zarian, a former Glendale mayor, said he wants to give Carrico a chance to explain her actions and beliefs.

Gary Moskowitz GLENDALE -- Concerned parents can tune in to Charter Communications Channel 15 next week for a program on how to help ease students' transitions from elementary school to middle school. Principals, middle school counselors and teachers will sit on a live discussion panel from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The show will be televised. The discussion will focus on what parents, students and faculty can do to make the transition from elementary to middle school a successful one. A similar program, focusing on the transition from middle to high school, will run on Charter Cable Channel 15 from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17. The call-in number for both shows will appear on the screen during show times.

Karen S. Kim GLENDALE -- Charter Communications will continue to show the Congressional Science Scholar Forum, presented by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Glendale) and Caltech, through the rest of the month on Channel 25. The forum, called "The Future of Chemistry: Fuel from Sunlight and Water," is the second in a series of quarterly presentations by researchers and professors from Caltech on different science topics. Charter will record and air the lectures for the 2001-02 academic year.

Karen S. Kim GLENDALE -- Charter Communications Inc. and digeo Inc. have launched a new service aimed at providing digital cable customers with an additional source for localized news and information. The free service began Tuesday in Glendale, Burbank, La Crescenta and La Canada Flintridge. Digital cable customers will now automatically be presented with a screen when they turn on their service that offers six different "i-channels." The "i-channels" are textual screens that offer customers localized news, weather, sports, entertainment, business or shopping information.

Erik Boal Hoover High distance runner Anita Siraki, who finished second at the Dec. 9 Foot Locker Cross-Country National Championships in Orlando, Fla., will be featured on Inside Cal-Hi Sports at 7 tonight on Fox Sports Net 2. Alex Coolman GLENDALE -- Attorney Mark Geragos will be the guest on this week's episode of the "Larry Zarian Forum." Geragos worked as the defense attorney for Susan McDougal, a key figure in the Bill Clinton-era Whitewater trial. He is also the attorney for one of three accused killers of Hoover High student Raul Aguirre and for Glendale Police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian. The show will look at some of Geragos' high-profile national cases as well as some of the work he has done on a local level.
