I want to update you that Lucky, the hen we rescued from a street corner near Glendale Community College in February 2010, quietly passed away on Nov. 13. Lucky had a great life with us and was much loved, and will be missed. We do not know how old she was, but we guess around 7 or 8 years old. Nathan Arnold Simi Valley

All the while, it’s set up shop on the corner, feeding off insects in the nearby bushes, or scraps from passersby. “We simply cannot catch the chicken,” said Ricky Whitman, spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society, which provides animal control services in Glendale.

A member of the family that created Zankou Chicken is staking his name - actually his brother's - on his ability to replicate the success of the rotisserie chicken chain with a new Mexican restaurant called Ara's Tacos. Steve Iskenderian, 34, is hoping that customers will line up for Mexican-flavored, spit-roasted chicken and beef the way they do for Zankou's chicken tarna and beef shawerma when his new restaurant opens next week. A 42-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly stole fried chicken and a piece of cheesecake at a Vons supermarket because he didn't want to wait in a long line, police said. Officers stopped Corey Young at Los Feliz and San Fernando roads after they found him fleeing the Vons, according to Glendale police. Young, who police said is on probation armed-robbery, told officers he grew impatient while waiting to pay for his chicken and cheesecake, and decided to walk out of the store, police said.

On a quiet, one-way Pasadena street, a few doors down from a comedy club and where you must take caution not to get run over by little old ladies trying to parallel park in front of a medical marijuana store, El Metate Café is a family-run Mexican restaurant that's not so easy to find, and nearly impossible to forget. This is the place for burritos the size of Popeye's forearms and a boiling concoction served in a giant pig-shaped mortar. It's where you can get tacos of chicken, beef, pork, brain, tongue and pig stomach.

I don’t know about you, but anything called a tahini chicken salad sandwich piques my curiosity. So I made my way down to the recently opened Tanya’s Lunch Box on Glendale Avenue to try one. It’s a crispy, flavorful, unique sandwich that comes with fries and a soda for a mere $7.50. And there’s more at this modest eatery run by a mother-daughter team. What started as a small catering company has become somewhat of a neighborhood hangout. Casual and friendly, Tanya’s specializes in your common Middle Eastern fare of lule and shish kebabs.

There are hundreds of kebab restaurants in the Burbank-Glendale area. This is one of them. Garni Kebab sits like a beacon at a fork in the road where Scott Road and North San Fernando Boulevard part company. This family-owned restaurant is clean and friendly and offers both dine in and take out, with free delivery ($15 minimum order). Pleasantries aside, the food left much to be desired. Let’s start with the lentil soup ($3.99). It had no flavor and it was mushy — like it had been sitting around for a long time.

The best part is that you can leave the cooking to the skillful chefs of Patina Catering. Every weekend until May 8, Descanso has added another option in al fresco dining, this one just outside the main entrance. Patina’s chefs are serving up a brief menu of barbecue favorites and a few special extras. I have to say their pulled pork sandwich ($8.95)

The recently opened Kyoto Seafood Buffet is without a doubt the best dining bargain in Glendale, especially at lunchtime Monday through Friday, when $8.99 brings you a fully stocked sushi bar, an ice table with fresh oysters, mussels and jumbo cocktail shrimps. Then there’s a hibachi grill with a chef standing by to cook ingredients that you choose, including extremely fresh boneless chicken breast, shrimp and sirloin steak. Kyoto also offers a wide variety of pre-cooked hot Japanese and Chinese dishes that include a very good hot and sour soup, orange chicken and other traditional offerings.

La Cañada Flintridge's Cafe Solé has a Manhattan Italian restaurant feel to it, with a modern but classical decor. It's certainly not what you would expect in a strip mall. The restaurant is close enough to the Glendale (2) Freeway to hit it with a frozen meatball. The restaurant had my party of three hooked with the complimentary bruschetta — fresh ciabatta served with a tomato salsa with olive oil — that raised our dining expectations. Cafe Solé has been open only a few weeks under new-old ownership.
