Over 20 students of Crescenta Valley High School volunteered in October at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Members of the Falcon men's baseball team and women's volleyball team pitched in at Biliary Atresia Day, an event sponsored by Kasper Wang, a pediatric surgeon who is a father of one of the student volunteers. Biliary atresia is a liver disease that affects newborn babies. If left untreated after three months of age, the infant can die. Crescenta Valley students played with patients and their siblings so parents of those patients could attend a seminar to learn about the disease and interact with parents who are facing the same issues.

September is National Hydrocephalus Awareness month, yet very few people are aware of it. Most people say, "Hydro what?" We don't. Our 6-year-old son Josh has hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus used to be called Water on the Brain, but that wasn't completely accurate. While everyone's brain has cerebrospinal fluid surrounding it, people with hydrocephalus either produce too much fluid, or more commonly, as in Josh's case, have a problem with circulating the fluid, which then builds up and causes pressure.

Robert Chacon When Elizabeth Hakes and Danielle Lynch heard about another girl about their age who had leukemia, they figured they had to do something. So the 8-year-old La Crescenta girls spent the summer selling soft drinks to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. At first they planned to raise $500. But on Thursday, they made a much bigger impression, handing over $1,500 to the hospital. For most kids that would be more than enough, but not for these two. "We want to do this again next year because it feels good to help people," Elizabeth said.
