NORTHWEST GLENDALE — Less than 10 minutes after the match concluded, neither coach displayed exhilaration. The Crescenta Valley High boys' volleyball team posted a 25-15, 25-17, 24-26, 25-15 Pacific League road victory against rival Hoover on Wednesday afternoon. Crescenta Valley Coach John Nelson didn't see much to celebrate about and Hoover Coach Deb Cohen said the athletes on her team must find a way to have more confidence in themselves. In fact, Nelson took more pride in his team competing well in a league road loss to Claremont, which shared the league crown with Arcadia last season, on March 30 than anything his team accomplished in the victory against Hoover (2-7, 1-3 in league)

NORTHWEST GLENDALE — While the Crescenta Valley High boys’ volleyball team has its sights set on trying to qualify for the playoffs, Hoover is a work in progress. Crescenta Valley Coach John Nelson noticed an improvement in Hoover’s play, however, after the Falcons completed a 25-10, 25-5, 25-9 Pacific League road sweep against the Tornadoes on Wednesday afternoon. “They have improved since the first time we played them,” said Nelson, whose team picked up a 25-2, 25-6, 25-6 win March 31 at Crescenta Valley.

Charles Rich A mid-evening trip to the movie theater looked very promising for several members of the Crescenta Valley High boys' volleyball team. There would be plenty of reason to go after the Falcons dropped the first two games and were on the verge of being humiliated and swept. Instead, Crescenta Valley penned a heroic comeback to earn a 13-25, 12-25, 29-27, 25-22, 15-10 Pacific League home win against Claremont on Friday night. The movies can wait another day for the Falcons, who won their third consecutive league match and avenged a 3-1 loss to Claremont on March 30. "No movies for us because we live for Friday night volleyball, especially in our house," said Crescenta Valley senior outside hitter Stuart Lange, who finished with 21 kills and 16 digs.

Skate park will not be a magnet with fees When it comes to the proposed fee to be placed upon all nonresident adults desiring to use Glendale's skate park, I think it would be beneficial to review some basic laws of economics. When the Claremont skate park opened, it attracted the skateboarding masses from all over the Inland Empire and beyond. Skateboarders are extremely price-sensitive when it comes to choosing our terrain; skating a free public skate park is significantly less costly than it would be to visit a private skate park or risk being ticketed by skating on private property.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — There's no need to flirt with danger. That's the message that the members of the Crescenta Valley High boys' volleyball team kept in their minds while competing against rival Glendale in Thursday's Pacific League match. A victory by the Falcons would give them the third and final playoff spot from their league. A loss to the Nitros would have left them in a third-place tie with Glendale, forcing a play-in match today. Crescenta Valley took care of business early, as it recorded a 25-17, 25-14, 25-7 road win against Glendale.

NORTHWEST GLENDALE — It was Hoover High that emerged with a sweep in Friday's Pacific League boys' volleyball match against Burroughs, but each squad had some positives to talk about following the Tornadoes' 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 victory. Hoover notched its first Pacific League win and, while Burroughs remains winless on the season, the Indians continue to show improvement just weeks removed from the creation of the school's first boys' volleyball program. CLAREMONT - Perhaps it was the postgame reaction of the Flintridge Prep football team on a sunny afternoon in Claremont that best signified just how far the Rebels have come in the span of just one year. Having hardly played their best, the Rebels were disappointed in the performance that added up to a dominant 40-13 victory over host Webb in their Prep League finale, but were still rejoicing in the history achieved with the triumph. Indeed, Prep has come a long way from a 2011 squad that had just one win, forfeited two games, went winless in league and would've gladly taken a victory of any sort.
