Hamlet Nalbandyan LA CRESCENTA -- Maybe falling behind by nine points in the third game was the best thing that could have happened to the Crescenta Valley High boys' volleyball team in Thursday's Pacific League match against Claremont High. Because after hitting rock bottom, the Falcons were a totally different team. And even though John Nelson's squad wasn't able to win that third game, the momentum and match was theirs. CV used a 42-16 run that stretched from the third game to the end of the match to top Claremont, 9-15, 15-10, 13-15, 15-6, 15-5, at CV. The win puts CV (8-4, 7-1 in league)

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan They might get an at-large berth in the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs, but with a chance to control their postseason destiny, the members of the Flintridge Prep boys' soccer team had a short lapse that might prove to be detrimental down the line. The Rebels allowed two goals in less than 30 seconds Friday, losing to visiting Claremont Webb, 2-1, in their final Prep League match. "We let down for one minute," Rebel Coach Stephen Oderkirk said.

Erik Boal It was going to take an almost superhuman effort by the Flintridge Prep boys' swim team to surpass Pasadena Poly for second place, let alone challenge Claremont Webb for the title at Tuesday's Prep League final. So the Rebels focused on other things, like winning individual crowns and securing as many CIF Southern Section Division III automatic marks as possible at the Matt M. Axelrood pool at Claremont-McKenna College. Senior Nick Seaver and freshman Jeff Kang obliged, capturing back-to-back championships in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 50.88 seconds)

Sang Lee ALTADENA -- The long days and nights started to add up for Crescenta Valley golfer Christine Corbett. But she knew that she'd break out of her slump sooner or later. After shooting high scores throughout the season, the Falcons jump-started her game finishing as the team's low-medalist with a 13-over par 50 on the par 37 Altadena Golf Course on Monday. Now she can rest easy. Despite Corbett's resurrection, CV (2-4-1) was unable to defeat Claremont High (1-3)

As a resident of close by Claremont, a fellow constituent of Rep. David Dreier, and a frequent visitor to the Crescenta-Cañada Valley, I am deeply troubled by the movement that has been taking place due to the pandering and demagoguery of a couple of radio hosts, KFI's Jon and Ken, who seek Dreier's defeat to line their pockets. Who is paying these rabble rousers to preach to a body of constituents of which they do not belong? Neither Jon nor Ken live in the district. Neither can vote for or against Dreier.

CLAREMONT - Plaques were not in short supply for the Flintridge Prep track and field program on what was a banner evening for the boys at the Prep League Finals at Claremont McKenna College on Thursday. The Flintridge Prep boys defended their league title, holding off archrival Pasadena Poly, 82.5-69.5, while earning both a track most valuable player in junior Alan Yoho and a field co-MVP in senior West Nowotny. “We thought going in we'd have a chance to win, but you have to still compete,” Rebels Coach Nick Ponticello said.
