The Glendale Unified School District will host its 13th annual High School Scholastic Bowl on Monday. The 2002 champion, Crescenta Valley High School, will go up against student teams from Clark Magnet, Hoover and Glendale high schools at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Glendale High, 1440 E. Broadway. Students who participate must answer challenging questions in subjects like language arts, social science, math, science and fine arts. They will be competing for nearly $4,000 in scholarships.

Alecia Foster NORTHWEST GLENDALE -- When Holy Family principal Carolyn Kolander was interviewing male teachers for her all-girl High School, she looked for someone who would be a role model for the students. She found Evan McGrath, who now teaches social studies at the school. "He is the epitome of what we want a teacher in Catholic education to be," Kolander said of his dedication to teaching. McGrath and eight other teachers and school staff members were recognized Wednesday by the Glendale Host Lions Club for their contributions to education during the past year.

Marshall Allen LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The four-man intellectual juggernaut of Crescenta Valley High School are repeat champions of the 2002 Scholastic Bowl. All four starting team members -- seniors Paul Mignano and Ryan Stoddard, and juniors Michael Blume and Justin Kim -- were veterans of the academic competition. This year's event took place at Glendale High School Monday night. Senior Daniel Lim is the team's alternate. "It feels great," Mignano said.

GLENDALE — Overcoming inexperience and illness, Crescenta Valley High won first-place at the 17th annual Scholastic Bowl on Monday. "We had a really young team and we weren't really expecting to win," said Amanda Chatem, Crescenta Valley High English teacher. The win puts an end to Hoover High's three-year reign as champions at the competition. Hoover student Christina Javier, 17, said her team was just not fast enough to respond to second-round questions. "But it was OK," she said.

Gary Moskowitz A bill written by Assemblywoman Carol Liu (D-La Crescenta) a year ago is finally paying off for career and technical education programs in Glendale's high schools. Almost 50 California schools this school year will share $4.35 million funded by Liu's Assembly Bill 1018, an industry-based certification incentive grant program designed to prepare students to enter the workforce and earn professional certification. Glendale, Hoover and Clark Magnet high schools will share approximately $289,000 for new programs in 2002-03, said Jerry Watson, administrator of the district's Regional Occupation Program.

Crescenta Valley schools took home some well deserved awards and recognitions at Tuesday’s school board meeting. The first honor was a recognition by the California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE)and Just for the Kids-California. These were presented to Dunsmore, Lincoln, Mountain Avenue and La Crescenta elementary schools in Crescenta Valley and Franklin Elementary in Glendale; also to Rosemont Middle School, Clark Magnet and Crescenta Valley high schools. The schools were recognized for making the CBEE Honor Roll.

Gary Moskowitz After winning only one out of five rounds of competition at a regional science tournament this weekend, the five members of Clark Magnet High School's team had a unanimous, lighthearted reaction to being eliminated: "Not bad for only two weeks of studying." Clark Magnet seniors Conor Bowman, Victor Constantinescu, Daniel Han, Philip Kahn and Punardeep Sikka participated in the 12th annual regional Science Bowl on Saturday at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
