Two students at Wilson Middle School find $300 and return the bills to their owner, a fellow student at the school.LA CRESCENTA -- They are being called the "three-hundred-dollar heroes." Wilson Middle School student Nariseh Yousife, 14, lost three crisp $100 bills at the school cafeteria Oct. 19; she thought she'd lost a precious gift her father sent her all the way from Iran. But when Sarkis Krikor, 14, found a $100 bill and Clay Handy, 11, separately found two $100 bills, neither one hesitated to do the right thing.

Erik Boal As if facing Heather Hamasaki wasn't an intimidating enough task already, this year, opponents have been presented with the challenge of not only matching wits with Glendale High's senior pitcher, but her entire family as well. And fortunately for Nitro softball Coach Kris Kohlmeier and the rest of his players, it's a combination that has been, at times, impossible to beat. Beginning with Clay Hamasaki sitting at the edge of the dugout calling his daughter's pitches, 17-year-old Heather relying on her overpowering right arm and pinpoint accuracy to deliver them, and her brother, 19-year-old Keith, positioning the Nitro outfielders accordingly, Glendale's opponents have struggled to find any weak links in the chain of command.

Gary Moskowitz SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- Asia Wilcox, a senior at Glendale High School, is hoping an epidemic will break out at school in June. Asia, 17, hopes the epidemic will be a willingness among the school's student population to help provide food for area residents who don't have any. Asia is one of 153 students in five ceramics classes at Glendale High who are handcrafting ceramic bowls. In June, the bowls will be used to raise money for Los Angeles area residents who don't have money to buy food.

Mirjam Swanson TUJUNGA -- There's being overmatched. And there's being ridiculously, completely overmatched. Then there's being ridiculously overmatched against a team with an agenda. That was the case for the Verdugo Hills High girls' basketball team Wednesday in its 83-23 Sunset Six League loss to a relentless Grant team at the Dons' gym. "We were definitely outmatched today," Verdugo Hills Coach Dan Nakauchi said. "Out-quicked, out-sized, everything."

Another lackluster first half. Another near-comeback. That was how the 2005 Pacific League season kicked off for the Glendale High football team as a valiant second-half effort came up short in a 28-18 loss to visiting Pasadena on Thursday night at Moyse Field. A week after the Nitros (1-5) erased a 21-0 deficit against Burbank only to lose, 30-27, Glendale found itself down 21-0, this time to Pasadena (2-4). Thanks to a yeoman's night from senior running back James Clay, the Nitros got within three at 21-18, but it wasn't enough.

The 20-14 setback Glendale suffered against host Alhambra in Friday night's season opener was a lot closer than the score indicated. All that separated the two football teams -- which began playing against each other in 1919 -- in the nonleague game was a yard, in fact. That was how short Glendale was from beginning the 2005 campaign with a possible victory. Down 20-0 nearing the end of the first half, Glendale's James Clay came up a yard from the goal line, and since Glendale had no timeouts left, the clock ran out on the half.
