The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Scott Hong (Glendale Community College, 2011) junior, Occidental College baseball: Having already singled and stole a base earlier in the game, the Tigers right fielder and No. 3 hitter reached base on a fielder's choice and came around to score the first of two ninth-inning runs, but it wasn't enough in a 4-2 loss to California Lutheran University on Saturday....

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Sako Chapjian (Hoover, 2008) junior, Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball : Fresh off a history making run with Glendale Community College last season, the former Tornado has wasted no time in coming up clutch for Cal State Dominguez Hills. Chapjian announced his presence with a two-run home run in his very first at bat for the Toros, sending a one-out shot to left-center field in the first inning of an 8-7 season-opening victory Friday.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Matt Curtis stood before the 90 or so attendants of the Falcons Summer Baseball Camp at Stengel Field on Thursday morning and drew some oohs and aahs from his audience when sharing stories about traveling around the country with a collegiate baseball program and celebrating in a dog pile on the mound after winning a championship, all while flashing his College World Series ring. Curtis brought a voice of authority on the subject for the young campers in attendance hoping to someday play college baseball, as the La Crescenta resident just completed his first season as head baseball coach at Cal State University Northridge after spending 10 seasons as an assistant with the highly successful Fresno State program.

William Henry Arnold 1923-2011   William Henry Arnold, a generous and faithful man, died on April 7th of natural causes in Van Nuys, CA. He was 88.   Bill came from very humble beginnings. He was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on February 12, 1923. He moved with his family to Glendale at the age of 7, where he lived for the better part of 80 years. As a small boy, he worked as a milk truck runner. He would show up at work well before sunrise, and for his efforts he would usually bring home a much needed half gallon of milk.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level. Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) UC Irvine baseball : With the Anteaters pushing toward the postseason, Bergman is rounding into top form. He displayed it on Friday, twirling eight shutout innings in leading Irvine to a 5-0 home win against UC Riverside. Bergman allowed six hits and two walks, while striking out five. It also continued a scoreless innings streak that now sits at 15 1/3 . Bergman owns a 7-3 record with a 4.21 earned-run average over 18 appearances and 14 starts.

SOFTBALL Crescenta Valley High in Loara Tournament: The Falcons won both of their games on Saturday, beating La Quinta, 10-2, in the opening contest and finishing off the afternoon with an 8-2 win over host Loara. In the first game, which was shortened to six innings by the mercy rule, Sydney House went three for four, homered and drove in five runs. Allison Lacey had a triple and three runs batted in for Crescenta Valley (11-8), which also got two runs from Sissy Sovereign (two for two)
