One count each of first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense might permanently derail the career and aspirations of Glendale High alumnus Jesse Meaux. The 23-year-old pitcher was recently arrested and charged with the serious offenses in North Carolina, where Meaux is a member of the Asheville Tourists, a minor league baseball team and low Class-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Meaux and Tourists teammate Michael Mason were both immediately arrested after warrants were issued Aug. 1 involving an alleged incident July 27. While Meaux posted $100,000 bail, Mason remained in Buncombe County jail.

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level. Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Tulsa Drillers: Last year's California League Pitcher of the Year, Bergman has made a fairly smooth transition to the double-A stage with Tulsa of the Texas League. Bergman, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year, has put up respectable numbers with the Colorado Rockies' affiliate after starring in class-A last season with the Modesto Nuts.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area Major League Baseball players .   Mark Loretta (St. Francis High, 1989) Los Angeles Dodgers infielder: Loretta, a two time All-Star, delivered one of the biggest hits of the season for the Dodgers on Saturday night en route to helping Los Angeles win the National League West Division championship. He came through with a pinch-hit two-run single to begin a five-run seventh inning in the Dodgers’ 5-0 home win against the Colorado Rockies that clinched the division title.

For the next few months and probably longer, the fate of Glendale High alumnus Jesse Meaux will remain in limbo. The 24-year-old current Colorado Rockies minor league pitching prospect was in Buncombe County District Court in Asheville, NC on Friday morning along with 23-year-old teammate Michael Mason. Both have been charged with two counts each of first-degree rape and first-degree sexual offense (four total counts apiece). Each offense is classified as a B1 felony in North Carolina and carries a range of potential sentences based on prior offenses, with a minimum of 12 years per charge.

GLENDALE — After sustaining an ankle injury in July of 2007, Jason Hirsh’s baseball career has had its share of tumultuous times. On Wednesday, the St. Francis High graduate’s career took a brand new direction, as the 26-year-old was traded from the Colorado Rockies organization to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later. “This is a fresh start for Jason,” said Hirsh’s agent, Bill Hertz. “It’s a great opportunity for him and one that he’s gonna take advantage of.” Hirsh, who was a much-ballyhooed prospect in the Houston Astros organization, was traded from the Astros to the Rockies in December of 2006.

Jesse Meaux appeared to have things under control in his quest to enjoy a breakout season and possibly earn a promotion. Meaux felt relatively pain free entering the season, leaving the right-hander excited about recording some quality pitching performances for the Asheville Tourists, the double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies in the South Atlantic League. Things started out splendidly for the reliever before the pain resurfaced in his right shoulder during his last outing May 24 against the Rome Braves.

GLENDALE ? The following are updates on local athletes competing in Major League Baseball. Gregg Zaun (St. Francis, 1989) catcher, Toronto Blue Jays: In good health, Zaun has begun to see his batting average swell in recent weeks. Entering Monday's road game against the host Minnesota Twins, Zaun was batting .233 with two home runs and 17 runs batted in. The Glendale native missed most of the first two months of the season because of a broken right thumb. He returned in early June and has batted as high as second in Toronto's potentially explosive lineup.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in Major League Baseball. HIRSH FALTERS IN LATEST OUTING St. Francis High graduate Jason Hirsh struggled a bit in his latest outing, but has also made some news off the field. On the field, the Colorado Rockies right-hander lost to the host St. Louis Cardinals, 9-2, on Thursday. Hirsh (2-3) yielded three earned runs, five hits and six walks. He struck out five in four-plus innings. The Rockies, who lost for the third time in their last four games, tied the game at 2 with single runs in the third and fifth innings.

No matter the level of competition, seamless transitions are nothing out of the ordinary for Christian Bergman. He began that success while once standing out on the baseball diamond at St. Francis High before being drafted by the Colorado Rockies out of UC Irvine and advancing to the double-A stage with the Tulsa Drillers. He's been showered with numerous accolades while piling up victories, including being selected to participate in the Texas League's All-Star Game for the first time.

Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) Casper Ghosts relief pitcher: Just over two weeks after being selected 470th overall in the 24th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 8 by the Colorado Rockies, Bergman made his professional debut with Colorado's rookie affiliate. The 2010 UC Irvine graduate was nearly flawless in his first outing with the Ghosts during a June 25 relief appearance on the road against the Idaho Falls Chukars.

GLENDALE — It was quite a Tuesday for Christian Bergman. It was quite a Tuesday that concluded a very memorable and significant four-day span in the life of the St. Francis High graduate. And finally on Tuesday afternoon, the waiting ended along with the self-described "roller-coaster ride" as Bergman was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 24th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. "It's really been a roller-coaster ride," said Bergman, who was the 470th selection in the draft, of the last four days.
