GLENDALE — A woman was hospitalized in serious condition on Friday after a vehicle spun out of control during a collision and struck her near the Americana at Brand, police said. She is the third pedestrian to be struck by a vehicle in the city in the past two months. The woman, whose name was not immediately available, underwent surgery on Friday morning at Los Angeles County Medical Hospital for a fractured pelvic bone, Glendale police Sgt. Pete Pressnell said. Doctors were concerned Friday that the woman may have suffered internal bleeding, Pressnell said.

Glendale is becoming an interesting place. The opening of the Americana on Brand on Friday may usher in changes that could be more fundamental than superficial. One of the trademarks of our city is homogeneity in our way of thinking. This may sound counterintuitive. After all, in the last decade, we’ve witnessed many issues that have come to divide residents. Yet, in the big picture, Glendale remains a conservative place with a population that is often resistant to change.

GLENDALE — Police are poised to roll out a pedestrian-education campaign today, designed to get the word out about problem intersections, where pedestrians are vulnerable to being hit by passing vehicles. The campaign — which is funded through a $133,000 California Office of Traffic Safety grant — will step up efforts to educate pedestrians and motorists, in light of the fact that more than 100 pedestrians were either injured or killed in pedestrian-vehicle collisions in 2006, Glendale Police Officer John Balian said.

GLENDALE — Organizers are expecting about 500 runners and walkers Sunday morning on Brand Boulevard during the city’s first annual Downtown Dash. The event — a 5-kilometer, or 3.1-mile run/walk on the streets of downtown Glendale — is held to raise money for the stroke center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. “We want to have an intensive community education regarding stroke and stroke awareness,” said Cynthia Cabatan, director of the neuroscience institute at Glendale Adventist.

Americana could make some ?Noise? My wife and I recently attended a play at A Noise Within and, as always, we were delighted with the production, the performances and everything about the experience. As I walked down Brand Boulevard to the theater, I noticed that the Americana at Brand project was nearing completion across the street, and I thought, wouldn?t it be great if developer Rick Caruso could find a corner of his development for a new home for A Noise Within, and make it affordable and convenient for them?

STREET NAME Caruso Affiliated officials are expected to pitch the name of Excelsior Lane for a side street into the Americana at Brand development that would extend west off Brand Boulevard. The hearing comes after the Redevelopment Agency last week refused to approve the name pending a more thorough explanation of how the developer chose it. Some on the board argued that the name did not fit in with Glendale heritage. Although the street is considered private, it would connect to public streets — Brand Boulevard on the east and Orange Street coming up from Colorado Street.
