The Church of the Lighted Window is hosting a concert Sunday featuring the Blackbird Trio. The group will play "Shostakovich Trio in E minor" and other classical selections. The group is composed of Nancy Roth on violin, Mary Anne Steinberger on cello and Alan Steinberger on piano. The concert is the first in the fourth season of the In Praise of Music series. The concert is at 4 p.m. The church is at 1200 Foothill Blvd. There is a suggested donation of $10, $5 for students and seniors.

The Glendale Philharmonic opened its second season with a spectacular performance Sunday evening at the First Baptist Church of Glendale. The musicianship, conducting, acoustics and intimacy of the concert were all of the highest order and provided a memorable experience. Johann Christian Bach's "Cello Concerto in C Minor" kicked off the evening. Acclaimed cellist (and Glendale Philharmonic founder) Ruslan Biryukov was the soloist for this selection, and he set the tone for the concert with a moving rendition of the piece.

About 250 tuba, euphonium and sousaphone players took to the stage and performed in harmony on Sunday during the annual Merry Tuba Christmas concert at the Alex Theatre. The shiny brass instruments glistened on stage as the musicians, ranging in ages from 10 to 84, played holiday favorites to a full house of concert goers. As the musicians played, the audience sang along to tunes that included, “Deck the Halls,” “Joy to the World” and “Hark the Harold Angels Sing,” to name a few. North Hollywood resident Kurt Leier and his 7-year-old son, Theo, came to the concert wearing their Santa hats.

The Friends of Music at Pasadena Presbyterian Church present Organists Kiyo Watanabe and Chiemi Watanabe in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 in the church's sanctuary. Kiyo Watanabe and his wife, Chiemi, present solo and duet concerts throughout the United States and abroad. In 2004, the couple performed in a concert tour to Japan. In addition, they have performed at international festivals, including the annual summer festival at Sprockets Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park in San Diego, and Festival Internacional de Organo at the Cathedral in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico.

On Saturday, June 2nd, the Armory will host Pasadena's premiere contemporary dance company, Lineage Dance, for an intimate dance concert. Not only will audience members be up close to Lineage in the studio setting, they will also be invited to participate in a post-concert conversation with the dancers and choreographer Hilary Thomas. This question and answer period is especially exciting for young people who are eager to know more about the world of dance. The affordable, family-friendly concert will feature some of the Lineage Dance favorites, including So Much Flowering and Drums of Reflection.

Moonlit movies at the center Come ready to laugh during Friday's showing of "The Pacifier," at the Pacific Park Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave. The movie will be shown at dusk, but seating is on the lawn, so moviegoers are encouraged to bring a lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Tim Willert GLENDALE -- A dance concert to benefit the MKM Cultural Arts Center will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Beyond The Stars Palace, 417 1/2 N. Brand Ave. Prior to the concert, Assemblyman Dario Frommer (D-Glendale) will present an award of special recognition to choreographer Shirley Martin. Martin choreographs The Martin Dancers and The Martin Youth Dancers, who will perform at the concert. The benefit begins at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet and no-host bar, and will include blues, dance drama, upbeat modern, Asian, salsa, ballet, high energy dance and spoken dialogue.

Glendale Centre Theatre will be the backdrop for the special benefit concert starring Broadway star John Raitt at 5 p.m. Sunday. The concert will raise funds for Jason Black, a young opera star recovering from a tragic accident. At 25, Black was an accomplished opera singer until a tragic accident left his vocal cords paralyzed. He has starred in numerous operas from "Rigoletto" to "Carmen" on stages across the world from Germany to Los Angeles. The concert will help raise funds to cover the necessary medical procedures to restore his operatic voice.

Gary Moskowitz SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- Composer Byron Lee, who wrote the song "Annabel Lee," will attend Glendale High School's annual instrumental music concert Thursday. The concert will feature a performance of Lee's composition, and guest tenor Luis Chaparro will perform. The concert will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium at Glendale High School, 1440 E. Broadway. A $3 donation is welcomed. The "Annabel Lee" song is based on the Edgar Allen Poe poem of the same name.

Amber Willard HOLLYWOOD HILLS -- Local members of choral and bell-ringing groups will be ringing and singing in the holiday season Saturday afternoon at the "Harmony at Christmas" concert. The Crescenta Valley Highlander Chorus and Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus, as well as quartets made up of some of their members, will be joined by the Alchemy Bell Ringers and Sunshine Chorus for the two-hour concert at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. "We want to bring a little joy because everybody gets so busy and bogged down this time of year," said Jackie Wheatley, assistant director of the all-female Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus.
