The across-the-board automatic spending cuts that took effect last week are a national story, but Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) want their constituents to know that the cuts will be felt locally. At the Mothers' Club Family Learning Center in northwest Pasadena on Friday, Schiff and Chu railed against the cuts - known as sequestration - that will translate to a $9-million cut in federal funding for Chu's district in 2013 alone, according to her office.

Incumbent Rep. James Rogan, running for reelection, does not deserve to be returned to Congress representing the 27th Congressional District for the following reasons: A) Rogan voted against tax credits for school construction and modernization. B) Rogan voted against HR 1760 which provided low or interest-free loans to local school districts which would have resulted in lower construction costs. C) Rogan voted twice to end the 100,000 teachers' program which would have reduced classroom size and added more teachers.

Janine Marnien LA CRESCENTA -- By the time Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Glendale) defeated Jim Rogan to represent the 27th Congressional District, concerns that a Democrat couldn't represent a traditionally Republican community had virtually disappeared. As a congressman, Schiff is well regarded for his efforts to listen to, and respond to, his constituents. That's part of what makes the redistricting policies so frustrating for many residents. Under the recently approved changes in district lines, La Crescenta voters will no longer be represented by Schiff in the 27th Congressional District.
