Claudia Peschiutta GLENDALE -- You can make a difference this summer -- by going to the supermarket. Vons and Pavilions stores in the area will be raising money for local charities in June and July through the statewide "Because Vons Cares Charity Challenge." Stores will be offering $1 and $2 coupons at checkout stands to raise money for the their given charity. Glendale area stores plan to help out the local Salvation Army, Glendale Humane Society and Crescenta Valley High School.

Darleene Barrientos In name, it's for the entire family, but everyone should know it's really about the kids. The Glendale YMCA's third annual Family Fall Festival will be a chance for children to play games, eat food and win toys and prizes throughout the day. Parents will also get a chance to find out about the city and services available to residents. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA, 140 N. Louise St. "We are trying to reach out to the community and let them know about all the resources available to them," said Helena Cray, the YMCA's festival committee chairwoman.

Remodeled store receives award Palladeo Construction, a Glendale-based environmental design and retail strategy, custom decor and fixture fabrication and full-service construction firm, partnered with Albertsons on a La Habra store remodel in 2008. The remodeled store recently received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first major retail grocery store to earn the distinction for an interior remodel.

Many of our businesses are coming up with some unique ideas to promote business and protect the environment. We hear a lot about the reuse of shopping bags, but trying to remember those bags each time we rush out the door is sometimes impossible. But there are some markets out there helping you to remember, such as Ralphs taking cents off the final bill, and Trader Joe’s giving out free raffle tickets for bringing in your own grocery bag. OSH has always offered those special “No Tax Days” weekends and is now taking it a step or two further.

Hollywood horror is waiting for you every Friday and Saturday night through Halloween, Oct. 31, at Universal Studios. For thrill-seeking horror buffs, Universal has been turned into a network of scare zones and fright mazes linked together by the terror tram which allows visitors to personalize their itinerary of fear. Three special mazes have been constructed, each featuring the star of a particular horror series — Freddy Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Jason of “Friday the 13th” and the cannibal crunching stylings of the Hewitt family of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” fame — just the thing for those tedious Friday nights.

The La Cañada Presbyterian Church has a number of ways that its congregation is reaching out during the holidays. One way is the Help World Impact organization which provides Thanksgiving food boxes for the poor. Requested foods are: coupons for free turkeys, boxed stuffing mix, canned fruit and vegetables, cranberries, brown sugar, marshmallows, cake mixes and flour (five pounds). Hamlet Nalbandyan The following are odds and ends from the Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, which meets at noon Tuesday's at the Elk's Lodge in Glendale. At last: The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club began handing out the Harold Prugh Award in 1996, which is given to the best high school football team in the Glendale Unified School District. There are three schools in the district, but one would've never guessed it after looking at the plaque on the trophy, which is also known as the City Championship.

Darleene Barrientos Detectives determined Saturday that a high school soccer coach strangled his star player because he was angry the teenager was planning to transfer to another school. The fictional scenario played out at the Glendale Central Library, where eight teenagers picked through three crime scenes and analyzed witness statements together, but only 14-year-old Dalar Nazari concluded that Coach Frank Mitchell killed Jamie Stokes because the soccer star's departure would disrupt his hopes for a promotion.
