Metrolink on Monday previewed a pioneering, $200-million crash prevention project for a top federal safety official, who expressed concern about railroad industry efforts to postpone deadlines for installing the sophisticated train safety system in other parts of the country. Deborah A.P. Hersman, chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board , viewed a locomotive and a rail car equipped with positive train control technology and testing gear at a downtown Metrolink rail yard.

A man who walked away after plunging his black Porsche 200 feet down a steep embankment of the Angeles Crest Highway Friday night may face hit-and-run charges, authorities said. The man, whose identity was not released, sustained only minor injuries and was able to walk away from the crash site near mile marker 27 in La Cañada Flintridge . A witness reported the crash at around 5:20 p.m. after seeing the car on the side of the highway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada.

An 83-year-old Montrose man was cited Sunday after he allegedly crashed his car into a deli on La Crescenta Avenue, police said. Andrius Pira was parking his car in front of Alexis Deli & Grocery in the 4000 block of La Crescenta Avenue, when he accelerated into the building, police said. Three patrons were inside the deli at the time of the crash, but police said only one of them suffered a small scrape. Pira was cited on suspicion of driving with a suspended license. Pira reportedly told officers that he received a letter from the Department of Motor Vehicles advising him that his license was suspended and he needed “to go to the DMV to fix it,” according to Glendale police reports.

Authorities are in the process of closing down all lanes of the Foothill (210) Freeway near Lowell Avenue in La Crescenta as emergency crews prepare to airlift at least one occupant of a car that slammed into the rear of a tractor trailer. It was not immediately clear how many victims needed to be extricated from the crash, which occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway just past Lowell, Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. All lanes will be closed shortly to prepare for the helicopter's landing, with the victim or victims slated to be airlifted to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

A fourth person died Monday after a Sunday night accident in Eagle Rock in which an SUV flew off the 134 Freeway onto a street, authorities said. Three people were hospitalized immediately after the crash -- a man, a woman and a 6-year-old girl. The man later died of his injuries, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday. Three people -- including the female driver and an 11-year-old girl -- were pronounced dead at the scene Sunday, authorities said. Their names were not available Monday morning because all of the victims' families had not been notified.

Police on Monday found a kilogram of cocaine inside a car and arrested one man after a foot pursuit prompted a roughly three-hour lockdown of a nearby neighborhood. The driver, Jabbar Lattimore, 30, was arrested after he and his passenger allegedly fled during a traffic stop on Western Avenue near San Fernando Road at about 9:35 a.m., Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. Police locked down Ruberta, Justin and Sonora avenues from San Fernando Road and Glenoaks Boulevard in search of the second man. K-9 units were brought in to assist, but the man, who was described as heavyset and Latino or white, wasn't found, police said.

Two men who allegedly robbed a medical marijuana clinic in Woodland Hills were arrested early Wednesday after crashing their truck into a building in South Los Angeles during a pursuit, officials said. Around 4:30 a.m., patrol officers with the LAPD's West Valley Division responded to a burglary call at a marijuana dispensary in the 19650 block of Ventura Boulevard, authorities said. A security guard reported seeing two suspects get on to the roof before entering the business, police said, and were seen carrying bags before they fled around 4:35 a.m. in a silver Ford pickup truck.

A 50-year-old man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly fought a teen who crashed a car into a tree in West Glendale, police said. The man, Armen Urutyan, was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly beat up the driver, a 17-year-old boy whose name wasn't released because he's a minor. The teen was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his Nissan Altima into the tree in front of an apartment building in the 300 block of Concord Street, police said.

A driver of a minivan died after crashing into a Caltrans truck early Tuesday morning on the 10 (Santa Monica) Freeway in El Monite, California Highway Patrol officials said. The 4 a.m. accident occurred on the westbound freeway near Peck Road when the minivan hit the truck, which was being used to pick up cones. Two Caltrans contract workers in the truck suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital. The CHP had said earlier that a Caltrans employee was killed in the accident.

The intersection of Bel Aire Drive and Western Avenue in Glendale was briefly closed to traffic Thursday after a gas pipe broke when a motorist lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the front of a home, officials said. The motorist, whose identity wasn't immediately released, was speeding about 10:35 a.m. west on the 1700 block of Bel Air Drive, drove through a stop sign and lost control of her vehicle as she tried to turn onto Western Avenue, according to Glendale police.
