Leonard "Joe" Kula, 66, of La Crescenta, died Sunday at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale after a nearly two-year battle from a stroke and complications of pneumonia. Mr. Kula, who worked in construction as a carpenter for more than 40 years, was born in Genoa, NE., and grew up on a farm in nearby Silver Creek. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968 and settled in Sunland-Tujunga after his honorable discharge. He was a member of American Legion Post 377 and was actively involved in Elks Lodge No. 2098.

Gilbert LeeSmith (age 73), born in Glendale, CA on January 16, 1939, passed away suddenly at Verdugo Hills Hospital, Glendale, CA on September 17, 2012. Gilbert was the son of Gilbert “Smitty” Smith, long-time director of the La Canada Youth House, and Leona Brooks Smith. As a young man, Gil was an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and La Canada United Methodist Church. He served his country in the Air Force for 4 years from 1961 - 1965 and was a dedicated electrical engineer at Southern California Edison (SCE)

Barbara was born in Los Angeles to Hollett and Lauretta Mae Conley, was raised and spent her entire life in Glendale. She worked for the Glendale YMCA for approximately 18 years and enjoyed many a summer working at Camp Fox in Catalina. Employment in later years was for JonDouglas/Prudential/Coldwell Banker Realty, as a front desk receptionist. Retired for 11 years, she enjoyed road trips and lunches with friends. Barbara is survived by sons, Steve Lauterback (Joyce) and Scott Van der Kolk and daughter, Sandy McKee; grandsons, Joshua McKee, Dale and Keith Lauterback and great grandsons, Cole, Grant, Taylor and Devon Lauterback.

Connie King was born on January 11, 1928, and passed away June 18, 2012 in Montrose California. Mom played organ and piano throughout most of her life starting as a teen at St. Francis Church in Pico Rivera. She also played for the choirs at St. Gerard Majella in Culver City, and Holy Redeemer Church in Montrose. Music was a major part of mom's life, and she taught music both at schools and privately. In addition, she worked as a school secretary, and also executive secretary at both Featherweight Enterprises and California Medical Review Inc. Mom is survived by her sisters Alice, Kathy, and Anna Marie, daughter Cynthia, sons Ron, Dave, and Tom, grandchildren Cheryl, Jay, Aaron, Daisy, Breanna, Cali, and Jenna, and great grand children Brianna, Brooke, Alyssa, and Mikayla.

Doris Gaer Boulware, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother died peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2010, at Windsor Manor in Glendale, CA. She was 103 years old. Born on January 14, 1907, she was raised on a diary farm in Creighton, Nebraska. Mrs. Boulware was a school teacher and a prize-winning fiction writer. She had been a resident of Glendale since 1930 and a member of Glendale Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Strong, in 1943, her second husband, LeRoy Boulware, in 1963 and her son Richard Strong, in 2009.

RUTH A. BURGER Ruth A. Burger, 79, died March 29, 2003, in Glendale. She was a La Crescenta resident for 43 years. Mrs. Burger is survived by her husband, Ivan, and son, Thomas. The visitation is at 3 p.m. today at Crippen Mortuary Chapel, 2900 Honolulu Ave., La Crescenta. The funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2411 Montrose Ave., Montrose. Interment follows at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills.

ROBERT EUGENE DUNNING Robert Eugene Dunning, 52, a longtime Montrose and La Crescenta resident, died Sept. 11, 2002, in Los Angeles. Mr. Dunning was born in Los Angeles. He was a roofer for 35 years and was employed by Rakisits Plastering. He is survived by his wife, Martha of Montrose; sons, Robert E. Jr. of Palmdale and Sean of Castaic; daughters, Cassandra and Kayla of Montrose; brother, William M.; sister, Willie Mae; and seven grandchildren.

MARILYN CANFIELD Marilyn Canfield, 80, a longtime Glendale resident, died Feb. 6, 2003. She was born in Chicago. Her family moved to Glendale, where she graduated from Herbert Hoover High School, and attended UCLA. During World War II, she left college to join the Navy, and after her discharge returned to UCLA.. Prior to retiring, she was an administrator at the P.E.O. Retirement Home. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Glendale for more than 52 years.

JULIA M. STOBE Julia M. Stobe, 94, died March 30, 2003, in Tujunga. She was a Glendale resident for more than 40 years. She owned and operated a specialty catering company for 24 years. Mrs. Stobe is survived by 12 nieces and nephews. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, 1341 Glenwood Road. Crippen Mortuary is in charge of direction. BONNIE VIERSEN Bonnie Viersen, 61, died April 1, 2003, in Tujunga. Born in March 1942, she was a one-time La Canada Flintridge resident.

CLARE K. AYRES Clare K. Ayres, a Glendale resident, died Jan. 16, 2003, in a Sun Valley convalescent home. She was born in Cleveland. She is survived by her daughters, Diane Ayres of La Crescenta, Katherine Baro of Gilroy, Frances Ayres of Boston, and Margo Kennedy of Glendale; sons, Patrick of Portland, Ore., Michael of Concord and George of San Luis Obispo; and 14 grandchildren. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero.
