SOFTBALL Over the July 18-19 season, the Crescenta Sports Assn. (CSA) 12-and-under softball team concluded its tournament season with an undefeated run to victory in the MidValley ?Sizzling Summer? tournament. The team played a total of 18 tournament games during the summer. The team consists of Shannon Ritter, Jessica Madeira, Katie Taix, Kayla Oliver, Sydnee Wells, Alex Nolan, Claire O?Conner, Karina Moreno, Chloe Fairbrother and coaches Vince Taix, Dave Fox, Shon Wells and Dennis Saboe.

It was a little chilly, yes, with families wrapped tightly in buttoned-up jackets, kids dressed in their uniforms, sitting in folding chairs and on blankets in the infield. The Crescenta Sports Association held its first ever opening day (night?) ceremonies Friday evening, as the players dressed in uniforms with jackets and hoodies marched onto the field at Crescenta Valley Park, their team names announced. After all was said and done, the families of the CSA parked their keisters on the infield, prepared to watch “Angels in the Outfield” projected onto a screen behind home plate.

Falcons suddenly edged by Burbank Crescenta Valley entered the season having ruled the Pacific league for the past four seasons. Burbank came in looking to chip away at the Falcons’ armor. Burbank (10-4, 3-0 in league) did just that. In a heated matchup, Burbank edged CV (8-5, 3-1), 10-9, at Burbank. Burbank’s Amberlynn Ullo scored the match-winning goal three minutes into sudden death overtime to give Burbank the victory. Falcons U12 take second at Pasadena The CV Falcons U12 conference basketball team played in the Pasadena Vikings New Year Bash Tournament this week.

This past weekend, the Crescenta Sports Association eight-and-under (U8) tournament softball team finished 3-1, second best to Pico Rivera?s 4-0, at the ?C? State Tournament. District winners and finalists from all over Southern California traveled to Lancaster to participate in this tournament. CSA opened on Friday with a win over San Marcos 8-4. Defense was key, with Elise Boyle making a great catch at third, and Michela Labellarte making the catch of the season in left field.

The CSA (Crescenta Sports Association) 10U softball tournament team placed second in the Mid-Valley Father?s Day tournament. The La Crescenta team picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the two-day tournament, beating the highly seeded Hart team, 8-2, in game one and a shut-out game two against Mid-Valley?s team, 9-0. In game one, clutch pitching by Kendall Ebert with eight strike-outs and backed by a strong defense prevented Hart from scoring more than a couple of runs.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, La Crescenta?s CSA 8-and-under girls tournament softball team competed in Oxnard at the district championships. They were pitted against La Cañada in the first round. The score was tied when time expired, with La Cañada pulling out the win by one run in the tie-breaker inning. La Crescenta battled their way through the loser bracket winning three games, Fillmore 7-3, Antelope Valley 10-2, and host city Seaside, 10-3 to face La Cañada yet again in the championship round.

With a combination of great pitching by Megan Henry and a bullet proof defense, Crescenta Sports Association?s under-eight tournament team went undefeated in pool play in last weekend?s softball tournament at Camarillo, advancing to the semifinals where they lost to Hart, 5-1. The CSA team took on Antelope Valley first and beat them 7-0. Shortly thereafter, they beat Moorpark and El Rio to earn their spot in the playoffs and a semifinals matchup with Hart. The U8 team fended off a potent Hart offense for four innings and scored one of their own before Hart scored four in the fifth inning.

Each year, more than 700 Foothill-area kids participate in the Crescenta Sports Association?s youth baseball and softball programs. And in addition to the basic skills of fielding, throwing, pitching and catching, those kids learn valuable lessons about being a team player and having a good attitude on the field. ?We have high standards for our players, coaches and parents,? said Dave Luce, an executive member of the CSA board of directors and commissioner for the 8-and-under age division.
