Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Amanda Peek had four options: Long Beach State, the University of Tennessee, the University of Alabama or Cal State Northridge. Each program had its enticements. One of the nation's best pitchers, Monica Abbott, is an All-American at Tennessee. Former Crescenta Valley High standouts Meredith Cervenka and Melanie McCauley play softball at Long Beach. And the other two schools offered Peek -- a 2004 graduate of CV -- scholarships.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Mark McCauley (Crescenta Valley, 2000) junior infielder, Cal State University, Northridge baseball -- The Matadors (6-24) haven't exactly been riding high this season. On Tuesday, Cal State Northridge snapped a nine-game losing streak -- one loss shy of tying the program record -- with a 9-5 home victory against Pepperdine (14-12). McCauley was hitless in four at-bats, but he scored a run. On the season, McCauley has started 25 of 26 games and is second on his team with a .343 batting average (34 for 99)

Charles Rich Steve Rousey saw a chance. Doubt never crept into his mind and now he'll strive to fulfill a long-time obligation of coaching collegiate baseball at the Division I level. The La Crescenta resident was named the head coach at Cal State Northridge on Monday. Rousey, who had been the team's interim coach since June 3 after spending the two previous seasons as an assistant coach at CSUN, became the seventh coach since the program's inception in 1959.

Charles Rich He's left USC with no regrets and quietly departed for Cal State Northridge. Don't suggest to Mark McCauley that it's a step down the ladder. He'll take the opposite approach and climb with little fanfare. McCauley, a former star infielder for the Crescenta Valley High baseball team that captured the CIF Southern Section Division I championship in 1998, transferred to CSUN in June with a pledge to possibly obtain a full-time position on the school's squad.
