Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Amanda Peek had four options: Long Beach State, the University of Tennessee, the University of Alabama or Cal State Northridge. Each program had its enticements. One of the nation's best pitchers, Monica Abbott, is an All-American at Tennessee. Former Crescenta Valley High standouts Meredith Cervenka and Melanie McCauley play softball at Long Beach. And the other two schools offered Peek -- a 2004 graduate of CV -- scholarships.

Charles Rich He's left USC with no regrets and quietly departed for Cal State Northridge. Don't suggest to Mark McCauley that it's a step down the ladder. He'll take the opposite approach and climb with little fanfare. McCauley, a former star infielder for the Crescenta Valley High baseball team that captured the CIF Southern Section Division I championship in 1998, transferred to CSUN in June with a pledge to possibly obtain a full-time position on the school's squad.
