IRVINE - Amid tournament titles and Pacific League championships, there was one crown and one accolade that lacked for the Crescenta Valley High girls' water polo program. Perhaps it was fitting that a brilliant year turned into a banner season for the Falcons, who captured their first-ever CIF Southern Section championship thanks to a stout defense, highlighted by senior goalie Gabriel Isacson, in a 10-5 victory versus Riverside Poly in Saturday's Division V championship at Irvine's William J. Woollett Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

LA CRESCENTA - While there was no official theme for Saturday evening's sixth annual Crescenta Valley High Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at the school's auditorium, perhaps excellence would fit the billing best. The 2013 class included nine individual entrants in Bill Boyd, Jeff Fox, Tara Gregory, Mary Ellen Jenkins, Jim Jordan, Heather Lindstrom, Al Staie, William Thomas and Chris Troffer, along with one team entry, which was the 1971 boys' basketball squad. Perhaps the evening belonged to Boyd, who was dually honored for his personal exploits and for being the leader of the 1971 boys' basketball team.

LA CRESCENTA - Sitting on a couch at home and constantly staring at his cell phone for scoring updates via text was too painful for Brandon Gerlach. The Burroughs High boys' soccer player didn't want to be in that position again. Instead, he wanted to use his skills to help put the Indians atop the Pacific League all by themselves. Gerlach accomplished that with a rousing performance Friday afternoon, as he finished with one goal and two assists to lead visiting Burroughs to a 4-1 league victory against Crescenta Valley.

After 80% of the Crescenta Valley High boys' basketball team's starting lineup graduated last year following a trip to the state tournament, Cole Currie found himself in a rare situation. And it came with a list of questions ranging from how would the senior guard adapt to the next wave of talent to roam the court with him to how comfortable he'd be passing or receiving the ball in different schemes? While players come and go and the makeup of rosters change, it took little time for Currie to make the necessary adjustments.

Crescenta Valley Water District officials this week voted to draw down heavily on the utility's reserves to pay off a ballooning pension liability - a decision they said would have positive long-term affects given the high interest rate they were being charged. Officials said the California Public Employees' Retirement System had been charging the district 7.75% interest on the original $855,192 debt since 2005, which would have brought the total tab over its 20-year lifetime to roughly $1.7 million.

The parents of a 15-year-old Crescenta Valley High School student who jumped to his death on campus last year have filed a lawsuit alleging district officials turned a “blind eye” to the bullying that they allege prompted their son to take his own life. On Feb. 10, Drew Ferraro jumped to his death from a third-story building at the school in front of other students. Not long into the ensuing investigation, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said Drew did not reference bullying in any of the “very telling” four suicide notes found on his body.

LA CRESCENTA - During a stellar start to the season, the Crescenta Valley High girls' water polo team has displayed stingy defense, steady, balanced offense, phenomenal work ethic and the ability to take down higher-division heavyweights. But in the span of two days, above all else, the Falcons have displayed sheer dominance. On Wednesday afternoon at CV, the host Falcons announced their presence with authority at the expense of San Marino to the tune of a 19-2 nonleague victory.

Whether competing in a regular-season or playoff match, 11 local boys' water polo players served notice for their respective bodies of work. Athletes from Glendale High, Flintridge Prep and Crescenta Valley took to the pool deck to participate in their share of matches against teams in the competitive CIF Southern Section Division V. LA CRESCENTA — As first impressions go, it was hard to fault the new-look Crescenta Valley High boys' basketball team's debut Tuesday night on its home court in the Falcon Classic. Senior guard Cole Currie, the main holdover from last year's CIF semifinalist squad, led the way with 24 points while sitting out the fourth quarter, while several of the Falcons' first-year starters got off to a good start in a dominant 74-35 pool-play win over Simi Valley. "We're a young team and we're still getting used to each other a little bit," said Currie, who also had six rebounds and five steals.

LA CRESCENTA - No matter what CIF Southern Section Division the Crescenta Valley High boys' soccer team is a member off, its goals remain lofty. After capturing the Division IV title last season - the program's first in its history - Crescenta Valley was moved up to Division III and entered its season-opening match Tuesday afternoon against Mayfair as the top-ranked team in the division's preseason poll. New-look Crescenta Valley created its own breaks as sophomore Justin Wright scored a pair of second-half goals off deflections to lead the host Falcons to a 2-1 nonleague victory.
