SOUTHEAST GLENDALE - In its previous game, the quarterback position was an afterthought for the Burroughs High football team, as it didn't attempt a pass in the second half. But quarterback Andrew Williams was back on the field for the Indians in Thursday night's Pacific League game against host Crescenta Valley at Moyse Field and left a deep imprint on the game. Williams managed an effective offensive effort for Burroughs and altered the game with a pair of huge runs after being flushed out of the pocket in the fourth quarter to preserve a 20-16 win, the team's second in a row. “I trust my O-line with all my heart, but what [CV]

BURBANK — For nearly nine minutes of tense, dramatic, back-and-forth Pacific League boys' water polo, host Burbank High and Crescenta Valley held each other scoreless. But just 26 seconds into overtime, Burbank's Zach Card changed all of that, skipping in a goal to end the drought and catapult the Bulldogs to a three-goal surge in the extra session that led them to a 9-7 win on Thursday afternoon at Burbank High. "This is the team that Burbank is," said first-year Bulldogs Coach Kristina Garcia, who was still stewing over an upset loss to Pasadena in overtime on Tuesday before her team pulled out Thursday's nailbiting victory.

PACOIMA - Things took a turn for the better for Burbank High girls' golfer Irene Maemura and the Crescenta Valley squad on Monday during the fourth Pacific League match of the season at Hansen Dam Golf Course. Maemura became the first athlete from the league field beside Crescenta Valley's Jocelyn Chia to earn medalist honors this season, while Crescenta Valley took another step closer to winning its first league championship since 2007. Maemura carded a three-under-par 37 to edge Chia, the league's defending individual champion, by one stroke.

One semester after Glendale Unified revised the open lunch policy at Crescenta Valley High School, there were fewer suspensions and incidents stemming from student off-campus lunchtime jaunts than in the previous semester, district officials reported this week. In all, there were 11 fewer suspensions in spring 2012 than the semester before. The school board revised the lunch policy in January to require parental permission in order for students to leave the campus for lunch. Before the change, 18 Crescenta Valley students were suspended and officials recorded 14 incidents involving students fighting or misbehaving during the open lunch.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE - For the past two years the La Cañada High football team has suffered defeats to Crescenta Valley, thanks to a Falcons running game powered by Marro Lee. Lee may not have been there Friday night when CV hosted the Spartans at Moyse Field, but William Wang filled those shoes nicely and delivered another Crescenta Valley victory - by a 48-21 margin - over its cross-town rival on the third annual “Gordy's Game,” which is...

NORTHWEST GLENDALE - There haven't been too many scares for the Crescenta Valley High girls' tennis team. Yet, on Tuesday afternoon during a Pacific League-opening match against host Hoover, the Falcons encountered one when standout doubles player Jackie Dilanchyan rolled her right ankle on a leaf while looking to return a shot midway through the second round. Dilanchyan shook off the pain initially before sitting on a bench with an ice pack applied to her tender ankle. "It's a concern and we have to be careful about practice [Wednesday]

The following are previews of the area's upcoming high school football games this week. Through the years, the spotlight on the second week of the season focused on the Crescenta Valley High and St. Francis football teams getting together to participate in the "Battle for Foothill Boulevard. " It led to Friedman Field and Moyse Field being jammed with thousands of spectators and a chance for the schools to also play for bragging rights. Things have changed for the time being, as the Falcons and Golden Knights will not meet this season.

When the 2011 cross-country season concluded for Crescenta Valley High, Flintridge Prep and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, they all found themselves in Fresno. Their paths all led them to their same desired destination and the trio of locals is hopeful of another trek north to the CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park. But all three will have to take vastly different paths to get there. Crescenta Valley has a large group of returners, led by All-Area honorees Cali King and Megan Melnyk, and is looking to use a strong pack to get back to state.

SANTA PAULA - On a night in which William Wang weaved his way through the Santa Paula High defense for 260 yards rushing, it was within the grasp of teammate Porter Hansen that the Crescenta Valley football team ultimately found a sigh of relief. Hansen secured an onside kick with 1:39 left in Friday night's nonleague game, giving way to Wang, who carried the ball three final times for the last 37 yards the Falcons would need to hold off the host Cardinals for a 26-21 victory in their season opener.
