TAMPA, Fla. -- Hats turned from simple headgear, or a way of protecting oneself from the Florida sun, to political statements for many delegates at the Republican National Convention. Delegates from West Virginia, for instance, wore coal miner hats. Former Glendale Councilman John Drayman is scheduled to be sentenced Monday morning in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.  Drayman pleaded guilty to three felonies last month, centered on the theft of proceeds from the Montrose Harvest Market, an organization he started prior to being elected to office in 2007 and one he helped run during his time on the dais. His bid for reelection in 2011 was not successful.  In addition to the embezzlement charge, Drayman admitted to a felony charge of filing false tax returns,.

I greatly appreciate taking that higher path by Dan Evans when facing the invasion of Glendale by the despicable Westboro cult. This is the time and place to face down evil here. I want to personally thank Dan Evans for his column, “ Stand up against absurdity” (Start the Presses column, Jan. 11 ). Had it not been for his column, I would not have known about this abhorrent group's (the Westboro Baptist Church) plans to protest in front of four of our churches last weekend. Because of Evans' column I went, along with two of my neighbors, to stand up against these really sick people. To my delight there were many, many people at the Presbyterian and Catholic churches (the two churches we stood in front of)

Re: Start the Presses column, Oct. 5. Dan Evans is wringing his hands over the intellectual property rights of Ron Kaye's drivel at the behest of the Aids Healthcare Foundation, but Evans is admittedly indifferent to Kaye's lack of journalistic integrity and intelligence. Police investigated a report of shots being fired in a west Glendale neighborhood this morning, but did not find anything to substantiate the claim.  Glendale police responded to a report of gunshots in the 900 block of West Glenoaks Boulevard at about 6 a.m. Friday, Sgt. Two Montrose boys who ran away from home Wednesday morning were found at about 6:30 p.m. that evening at a friend's house in North Hollywood, Glendale police said.  Ryan Handlin, 12, and Marquis Handlin, 11, were returned to their grandparents, who they moved in with after their father died. Police said the boys' new home “was not the ideal situation” and may have run away due to family issues.   Glendale police said the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services would be following up with the boys and their grandparents.  -- Dan Evans, Times Community News Follow Dan Evans on Twitter: @EditorDanEvans .
