Raquel Cordova has her heart set on developing a new dance company, combining contemporary ballet and modern dance styles with a dash of Peruvian panache. The Burbank resident is artistic director of Creations Dance Theatre along with fellow dancer Felicia Guzman. Cordova?s husband, Anthony Flores, is chief financial officer. Incorporated in July, the company performed Sunday at the TriArt Festival in San Pedro and will introduce their methods to students during upcoming workshops at dance studios in Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge.

credits Several college-credit dance classes will be offered this fall at Glendale Community College. Jazz Dance Techniques 1 will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The same class will also meet at the same times with an added Saturday class from 8 to 10:12 a.m. Jazz Dance Techniques 2 will meet from 10:15 to 11:47 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. An additional Saturday class is open from 10:30 a.m. to 12:42 p.m. An Artist-in-Residence class will meet from 1:15 to 4:38 p.m. Fridays and will feature professional dancers.

California DanceArts kicks off summer with an Open House at 4490 Cornishon Ave., La Cañada, and a series of free events for the community this weekend. Students from the dance school will make presentations showing what they have learned in their classes. The demonstrations will feature young dancers of all ages with a variety of dance styles. ?It?s a wonderful opportunity for young dancers to perform and for the parents to see how much fun the students have,? says Alex Peterson of La Cañada, whose 8-year-old son, Harry and daughter Ellie, 10, will be performing.

Gary Moskowitz Not once this weekend did Trish Vaughn think about the "daily grind" of her job as an administrative assistant for a mortgage company in Riverside. Instead, Vaughn spent her weekend belly-dancing in front of thousands of people at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road, during the Cairo Carnivale dance festival. Vaughn is a member of the Riverside- based dance group, Desert Mirage. About 550 people celebrated Middle Eastern and Mediterranean music and culture through cabaret and folkloric dance performances on two stages at the event.

Dance lovers will be treated to multifaceted styles of the art March 8 at the Glendale Alex Theatre as "Celebrate Dance," in its ninth year, brings together dance companies from throughout California to perform for one night only. And for the first time, tap and live music will be included. Eight dance companies will perform dance styles from urban tap and contemporary jazz, to new wave and ultra modern dance. As "Celebrate Dance" Executive Producer Jamie Nichols does each year, several new companies will be introduced with this year's performance, to join returning dance companies - SoleVita Dance Company and Mizerany Dance.

Area dance enthusiasts are staying fit while enjoying a method of movement that is steeped in history. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, which has branches all over the world, is keeping Scottish Country Dancing, the official ballroom dance of Scotland, alive. There are three branches in Southern California — the Los Angeles Branch, the San Gabriel Branch and the Orange County Branch, said Burbank resident Aase Hansen, a member and chairwoman of the Teachers' Committee for the Los Angeles Branch.

Kids of Rock Theatre holds auditions BURBANK -- The Kids of Rock Theatre is having auditions on Mondays and Thursdays during June in Burbank for boys and girls 8 to 18 for their summer show, "Hollywood to Broadway." The show features singing and dancing, combining the musical styles of pop, rock and musical theater with a variety of dance styles that include hip-hop, jazz, robotics and swing. "Hollywood to Broadway" will be performed Aug. 14 at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood.

Flintridge Preparatory School's Dance Department will present its winter dance concert on Thursday, January 19. The program, a showcase of student-choreographed works, will feature solo and group compositions and a variety of dance styles. This will be the second of Prep's dance shows to consist entirely of choreography by students. Some of the pieces have been choreographed collaboratively by an entire dance class, while others have been created by individual choreographers. The program will include Advanced Dance class projects that use live choral, instrumental, and spoken-word accompaniment.

JOYCE RUDOLPH Those of us who love to ballroom dance are grateful the Bobby Perino Big Band is continuing its series "Big Band Dancing at the Moose" from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Moose Lodge, 357 Arden Ave., Glendale. Guests can exhibit their ballroom and swing-dancing skills to an orchestra playing the standards from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Dance styles are East and West Coast swing, waltzes, foxtrots and mixers. Latin dance styles include cha-cha, rumbas, mambos and tangos.

Last Friday, the Crescenta Valley High School Dance department put on their "Winter Dance Assembly '07" in MacDonald Auditorium. It featured several dances including modern hip hop, jazz, and ballet. The dances were largely self choreographed with the help of CV dance alumna and dance teacher Fredda Manzo. Nearly 80 dancers from the intermediate and advanced dance classes performed in the assembly that allowed students to explore different dance styles in a variety of genres. "I think its a wonderful program," says Manzo.
