Gretchen Hoffman LA CRESCENTA -- A city of Glendale hazardous materials crew was called in Wednesday to investigate a suspicious substance at the La Crescenta post office, but tests at the scene ruled out anthrax. Firefighters were called shortly after noon after the driver of a delivery truck discovered a white, powdery substance in the back of the truck, Glendale Fire Capt. Tom Marchant said. The truck makes regular deliveries to the post office at 3300 Foothill Blvd.

The 83-year-old man who died Monday after being struck by a minivan in Glendale was identified this week as Kourkin Anouchian. Los Angeles County coroner's officials on Thursday said his body was scheduled to be examined soon to determine the nature of his fatal injuries. Anouchian, a Glendale resident, was pronounced dead at Glendale Adventist Medical Center after the collision at Broadway and Maynard Street. Anouchian was walking about 4:10 p.m. in an unmarked crosswalk at the intersection when 40-year-old motorist Sana Hussein failed to stop and struck him with her minivan, Glendale police said.

Amber Willard The following incidents were taken from police reports. 1400 block of Alameda Avenue: A man told police his dog was stolen from his backyard on June 19. 1000 block of South Central Avenue: Three men were arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of a crack pipe and syringes. Police said officers arrested a 30-year-old Tujunga man, a 32-year-old Los Angeles man and a 36-year-old Los Angeles man in a supermarket parking lot as they plotted to burglarize the store.

SOUTHWEST GLENDALE ? Victor Soto "died" on Wednesday. But before pretending to be overcome by deadly ammonia fumes in a simulated exercise at the city's Utility Operations Center, he was able to activate an alarm and call for help. "It feels good knowing what the routine is in case of an emergency," said Soto, a water tester at the plant. "We talk about this stuff all the time, but it's different when you do it." The following information was taken from police reports: 200 block of West Fairview Avenue: A 25-year-old Pennsylvania woman and a 43-year-old Reseda man were arrested Thursday on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and medication not prescribed to either of them. 3500 block of Foothill Boulevard: A 47-year-old Glendale man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of touching himself in public. 1200 block of East Wilson Avenue: A Glendale woman reported Wednesday that $7,200 in jewelry and cash was stolen from her apartment.

GLENDALE — Police were still trying to determine Wednesday if a 32-year-old Glendale woman and her brother, who were arrested after police posed as Home Depot workers and delivered high-priced appliances they allegedly purchased using a 90-year-old woman’s account information, were involved in other thefts, officials said. Detectives were investigating whether the siblings, who were identified as Anahit Injyan and Gevorg Injyan, 30, of Burbank, might be tied to a much larger operation of similar Home Depot purchases, police said.

Police officers on Thursday built a temporary ramp for a 24-year-old wheelchair-bound woman after thieves reportedly stole the original in broad daylight. Narine Bagdasaryan, who fell 50 feet to the Los Angeles River from atop the Colorado Street offramp three years ago after being sent through her car’s windshield in a single-car accident, came home from physical therapy sessions about 5 p.m. Thursday to discover that the single-wheel dual ramps up to her door step had been stolen, family members said.

SOUTH GLENDALE — A homeless man, who had just been discharged from Glendale Memorial Hospital after paramedics found him lying on the ground, was run over by a 7-Up delivery truck later that morning as he crawled along the street, officials said. Glendale paramedics picked up the reportedly intoxicated man, whose name was not released, about 7:53 a.m. on Sept. 13 at San Fernando Road and Cerritos Avenue, said Glendale Fire Battalion Chief Greg Godfrey. He was soon released from Glendale Memorial Hospital, and at about 9:47 a.m. he was run over on Central Avenue and San Fernando Road, about a block away from the hospital, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

An 83-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon after he was struck by a 40-year-old motorist at an unmarked crosswalk in central Glendale, police said. The man, who officials had not identified Tuesday pending the notification of his family, was taken to Glendale Adventist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. He was walking at about 4:10 p.m. in an unmarked, but legal, crosswalk at Broadway and Maynard Street when the motorist, who was driving west on Broadway, allegedly failed to yield and struck him. The motorist, Sana Hussein, of Glendale, was driving a minivan and remained at the scene, police said.
