Ten Years Ago Operations Lieutenant Ralph Martin, who had worked at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station for seven years, was named the new chief’s aide at the Monterey Park Sheriff’s Station. Then-CV Commander Capt. Garry Leonard said the well-respected Martin would be difficult to replace at the local station. Twenty Years Ago Nearly 30 hopefuls were in the race for a seat on the newly formed La Crescenta Town Council, with the first election set for March 9, 1989.

The smoke that filtered through the dark clouds hovering above Crescenta Valley early last Friday morning was due to a controlled burn behind Descanso Gardens planned by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said Don De Young, LACoF Assistant Chief of Air and Wildland Division. The prescribed burn program targets areas that are particularly sensitive to wildfires. The Descanso land is covered with dry vegetation. Friday?s burn took care of much of that dry fuel that would promote a disastrous wildfire.

The grace and power of Japanese dance and taiko drummers, as well as the beauty of Japanese flower arranging will attract visitors to Descanso Gardens during its annual Japanese Garden Festival this weekend. The Descanso Chrysanthemum Society is also hosting its annual show. Most events are free with admission. Ikebana Display — Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m . Ikebana, the art of flower arranging, is perhaps the most famed and actively practiced of Japan’s traditional arts.
