I want to address a topic that has been on my heart over the years. It is being discussed in a course I am taking. The topic is the discrimination of women in leadership in the church. I have in many ways been affirmed in church life. I am ordained, have been for well over a decade, and have served in church settings for some 18 years now. I have held the pulpit, performed weddings, funerals and baptisms and have been a youth, full-time assistant and marriage and family pastor.

BURBANK ? Capping an end to a tense trial that pitted the Glendale Police Department against one of its veteran officers, a jury found on Friday that the department did not engage in discrimination in denying the officer?s attempts at promotion. Twenty-two-year Officer Patricia Larrigan, who was injured on the job in 1994, alleged that she was denied a promotion to sergeant because of her disabilities. But department officials argued that while Larrigan passed two of three portions of the sergeant testing process in 2003 and 2005, she never passed all three.

Seven teenagers found themselves in a terrible work environment Friday when they temporarily joined the team of Burger Town — a hypothetical fast-food joint with a culturally insensitive and vocally abusive co-worker and a boss who could care less. The scene was an enactment of an extreme case of workplace discrimination put on by Glendale Police Explorers during a workshop that outlined types of harassment, employment rights and resources available to victims. The Explorers, 13 high-school students who are learning about police work, met in the Glendale Police Station's Community Room.

BOB HOPE AIRPORT ? A former airport police officer has filed suit against the Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena Airport Authority claiming racial discrimination and wrongful termination. Michael Gomez, was fired on Sept. 2, 2005, after a fight with another officer, according to his complaint filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court on April 12. The suit, however, claims that Gomez did not start the fight, and he suffered humiliation being unfairly reprimanded in front of his fellow officers and discrimination at the hands of his superior officers due to his race.

I read an article recently from Armenpress, an Armenian news agency, titled "Armenia receives $4 million from the global fund." In brief, the article is about funding for a national program aimed at preventing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the Republic of Armenia for the next three years. This article was also a link on the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society website. The website provides a wealth of information about gay and lesbian culture, society, health and events.

reversed I wonder if anyone else noticed the irony in Ani Amirkhanian's column of Feb. 28-29? She speaks with humor about being treated differently in an Armenian-owned business because she looks Caucasian (her words). Now put the shoe on the other foot. A minority walks into a Caucasian business and gets the same treatment and you frequently have outrage, letters to the editor, etc. Now, why is this? One way it's discrimination, and the other way it's reverse discrimination -- either way it's wrong.

city Some in the community have attacked Councilman Bob Yousefian because of comments he made about treatment of Armenian-American businesses in the community. First, I must say that I do not support using discrimination and prejudice to further personal agendas. I believe that prejudice and discrimination are too often used improperly. As such, we must use the word very carefully. I must also add that as Armenian Americans, we must be more involved with our communities.

A jury found Nestle intentionally discriminated against Richard Herr, who was hired as an auditor at the company's Glendale offices, and coerced him into quitting his job, according to the opinion ...

Darleene Barrientos Three female police officers were awarded $3.5 million by a jury Monday that found the city of Glendale did not prevent the women from harassment, discrimination and retaliation at work. The jury of three women and nine men deliberated for 15 days, and found that officers Katie Frieders, Renae Kerner and Jamie Franke were subjected to a hostile work environment as employees of the Glendale Police Department. Individually, Frieders was awarded $850,000, Kerner was awarded $1,305,176 and Franke was awarded $1,361,250.
