I needed to renew my driver’s license. In my mind, I had been a good driver. But I got a notice in the mail asking me to take the written exam and perform an eyesight test. It turned out I had not been that good after all; I’d had a few tickets. I had been avoiding the task for a while, but my deadline was approaching. At my age, there is nothing more embarrassing than calling Mom to bail me out of jail because I was caught driving without a license. I had good reason to procrastinate.

In the cynicism of our “Hollywood” mentality, we see all too often that what matters most is who you know, not what you know and who you are. But in the moment-to-moment engagements of our daily lives, it sometimes matters more how we treat the people we don’t know, or hardly know, and how they treat us. It’s what gives a sense of intimacy, of community, of being part of something greater than ourselves in a vast, sprawling metropolis where...

The Assembly Transportation Committee passed a bill Tuesday that would increase penalties for speeding drivers in the state. Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, who introduced the bill, was inspired to craft the legislation by recent pedestrian fatalities at the hands of speeding drivers in Glendale, he said. While speeding on residential streets has been a recurrent public safety concern in Glendale and Burbank, Krekorian said the straw that broke the camel’s back was the death of Glendale resident Elizabeth Sandoval in July.

I found Chris Edmonds and Arby Eivazian’s recent letters interesting in their sincerity (“Disappointed in councilmen’s stance,” Mailbag, Friday; and “Writer went too far with letter,” Mailbag, Friday). I have no doubt that both feel passionately about the issue regarding absentee ballot applications. I find it unfortunate how difficult it has been to get through all the emotions about this issue and look at the real substance. Edmonds criticizes “our two local Democratic councilmen, Frank Quintero and John Drayman” for not toeing the party line.

GLENDALE — A Superior Court judge ruled Thursday that 37-year-old Yurie Park, who is charged with manslaughter for the Oct. 29 death of a Toll Middle School student, can have her license back but only to drive to traffic school and take her children to school, and she cannot drive in the city. Judge Stan Blumenfeld on Dec. 17 ordered the Sun Valley woman to surrender her driver’s license to the court because he said at that time he felt driving would be traumatic for her. He ordered that the court return her license Thursday on the limited conditions.

DENNIS MOUNTJOY Arnold Schwarzenegger did the right thing when he immigrated to America from Austria as a young man -- he came here legally. As governor, he did the right thing [recently] when he vetoed the bill that would have given California driver's licenses to immigrants who, unlike the governor, entered this country illegally. The backers of this legislation say they are concerned only about traffic safety and auto insurance. That's simply not true, and they know it. Their hidden agenda is to blur the distinction between legal immigrants -- like Gov. Schwarzenegger and millions of other immigrants who have played by the rules when they came to America -- and illegal immigrants, who have broken our laws.
