An exuberant soloist and a masterful orchestra delighted guests during the opening concert of the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra's 16th season. The Hall of Liberty, tucked inside Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, was filled nearly to capacity for the free concert, held Nov. 18. The evening started out on a high note for youngsters during the Musical Menagerie an hour before the show. John Pedersen brought several classical-music instruments from his shop, Pedersen's Band & Orchestra, for them to try out. Rachel Bell , 11, of Eagle Rock, and Julia Carras , 12, of Burbank, were trying every instrument.

EAGLE ROCK — It was an intimate night of sharing stories, poems and reflections on domestic violence as more than 30 women and children came together at the IMIX Bookstore. Eliza Karagezian, volunteer coordinator for Glendale YWCA, organized the open-mic night as part of the YWCA's Week Without Violence. The evening differed somewhat from other events in that it allowed people to offer their points of view, Karagezian said. "It's a really freeing experience and it takes away some of the shame from it and lets people let go at some level of that trauma," she said.
