I can't make a decent egg foo yong to save my life. I can't pave a sidewalk, repair a computer or dry-clean a suit. And you sure as heck don't want me to groom your poodle. So who am I to tell people with all these skills and more how to use quotation marks in their business signs? In the more than three years that I've been writing this column, never once have I been tempted to write about the errant quotation marks you see around words like "free," "special," "please," "exit" and "crab meat."

Students in four first-grade classes at Chamlian Armenian School convened in the cafeteria Wednesday, where they anxiously waited for the green eggs and ham they were about to eat to commemorate Dr. Seuss’ March 2 birthday. During the previous week, the classes had read one Dr. Seuss book during each school day and learned about the author, born Theodore Geisel in 1904. His book, “Green Eggs and Ham,” was published in 1960. His first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” was published in 1937 after 27 publishers rejected it. By the end of Geisel’s career, he had written and illustrated 44 books, won a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award, three Caldecott honors, three Emmys and three Grammys.

The Glendale First United Methodist Church held its Sunday Easter sunrise service outdoors at Casa Adobe de San Rafael under clear blue skies and sunshine. About 50 parishioners came for worship and listened to Associate Pastor Heather Blackstone deliver the sermon. Blackstone started the Easter service with a story of a young girl named Sarah who needed a heart transplant but had little hope of getting the heart she needed until a boy, Lucas, died during a shooting, and his family donated his heart to her. Blackstone’s sermon reflected the story of the resurrection of Christ, she said.

LA CRESCENTA ? In the most emphatic of fashions, Crescenta Valley High?s girls? water polo team closed out the Pacific League regular season on Tuesday afternoon. For over 20 years, Falcons Coach Pete Loporchio has been involved in water polo, but he believes Tuesday was a first for him. Winning their 13th consecutive league match, the Falcons did so behind a defense that was perfect, at least on the scoreboard, as Crescenta Valley shut out archrival Arcadia, 10-0, to finish the league?

CENTRAL GLENDALE — Virgil’s Hardware Home Center, long known as the quirky source of everything from eggs to 50-year-old door knobs, has been purchased by the owner of Do-It Center hardware stores after 100 years of family ownership, company representatives confirmed Wednesday. Chatsworth-based Neiman Reed Lumber Co., which also owns a Do-It Center in Burbank, informed Virgil’s employees of the buyout during a staff meeting Monday, store clerks said. The change stirred fears among loyal shoppers who often chose the store over other hardware outlets because of its staff expertise, unique selection and sometimes odd offerings.

Even though my children are no longer small, they still expect to come home before Easter to find dozens of hard-boiled eggs and the familiar decoration supplies ready for their annual egg dye spree. We're not particularly loyal to one brand of egg dye. We have experimented over the years with various types of dye, including tubes of color which I thought might be less messy than the tablets, but in the end the favorite is usually a tablet product from PAAS. Every year PAAS sells more than 10 million dye kits, which Americans use to color almost 180 million eggs.

Instructor Curtis Adney places a transparent copy of his high school report card on the overhead projector. Not a pretty picture. Three Ds and two Fs. Then Adney places another transparent copy of another report card, this time from College of the Sequoias. Straight A’s. “Everyone has the brain power to get all A’s,” Adney says. “Everyone in this class has the natural brain capacity to get all A’s in school.” For students, the ability to turn grades around is as simple as making key lifestyle and academic changes, with a few tips and tricks along the way. Such is the cornerstone of Adney’s class, Natural A’s, at Toll Middle School Monday afternoons, presented by the Glendale Community College Services Education Program.
