The year was 1936, and Cleopatra Cox Davidson, a student at Hoover High School, was an entrant in a Miss Glendale contest sponsored by the Elks Lodge. The winner would compete for the title of “Miss Liberty” at the national Elks convention in Los Angeles the following week. “My mother clearly remembers that exciting time in her young life,” Shirley Barlow wrote. “She was 17, living on Palm Drive and working after school at a drugstore on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Dryden Street for 20 cents an hour.

Glendale resident Penny Hansen is not an avid bingo player, but when she heard about a special Thursday night game benefiting underprivileged children, she bought enough cards to last the night and even chipped in a few extra bucks for more than a dozen raffle tickets. That special game, held at the Glendale Elk’s Lodge, was a benefit for the Glendale Police Officers Assn.’s Cops for Kids — a 20-year-old program that raises money to purchase holiday gifts for underprivileged children.

About 70 classic cars, hot rods and muscle cars packed the parking lot of the Glendale Elks Lodge on Sunday for the 13th Annual Glendale Elks Car Show, as enthusiasts came to see their favorite automobiles and support a good cause at the same time. The event raises money for the Elks Scholarship Fund and other charities that benefit children in Glendale. “This is the biggest fundraiser that we do of a single event,” Jack Wright, car show coordinator, said. “The money will be designated to where the need is.” The car show was expected to raise more than $5,000, Wright said.

A chance to dance on St. Paddy's Day The Irish Center of Southern California will have its 13th annual St. Patrick's Day dinner dance at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday at the Hilton Glendale Hotel, 100 Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale. GLENDALE — Third-grade students in Glendale Unified School District and in about six parochial schools will have their very own dictionaries by the beginning of February thanks to Glendale Elks Lodge No. 1289. The Elks Lodge, a fraternal organization that does community service, began distributing 2,400 children's dictionaries to third-grade classes on Tuesday, said Bob Bowers, leading knight for the Glendale Elk's Lodge. The organization will finish giving the dictionaries to the 19 elementary schools in the district and about six parochial schools by the first week of February.

Elks have Hoop Shoot Contest Glendale High School Gymnasium was the site for this year's annual Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Competition, drawing boys and girls from Glendale's elementary schools.
