Gary Moskowitz Fifteen-year-old Arpi Nazarian is probably not the first teenage girl to flip through a copy of People Magazine looking for ideas for a new outfit. The Glendale High School sophomore admits she likes to look at pictures of what famous actresses are wearing because it gives her ideas of how to be fashionable and stand out from the crowd. "You want to be different," Arpi said. "You want to feel unique, of course, and what you wear every day can help you do that."

Last week I wrote about two young ladies who graduated from CVHS five years ago. Amy Kong and Grace Paik came to visit earlier this month. I knew the girls during their teenage years. It was a treat to reconnect with them. Amy seemed much the same, but Grace surprised me. Her verbal skills have improved enormously. Grace was born in America. Her family moved to Korea, where Grace was enrolled in an American preschool. Later, she attended a Korean public elementary school, but continued to read and print in English.

The film version of Lauren Weisberger's semi-autobiographical "chick-lit" best-seller, "The Devil Wears Prada," is a reflection of the world in which it takes place ? the combination of publishing and fashion, which at any moment is an intersection of slick, stylish and shallow. And in an environment that's competitive and calculating, there is a hidden layer of depth and substance, which comes as a nice surprise. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a Midwestern college graduate looking for some place to jump-start her journalism career in New York.

About 80 members and guests gathered on Sept. 16 at the Jeffers Estate in La Cañada Flintridge to raise funds for its philanthropic pursuits, which include the Ensembles in the Schools program, where a small number of symphony musicians visit elementary schools and impart classical music education on the students.

When she came to Woodbury University more than three years ago, Jocelyn Ramirez planned to study architecture. But finding out how structured it was, Ramirez felt her creativity would be stifled and switched to fashion. Now in her senior year at the Burbank campus, Ramirez has a sense of the satisfaction she longed for. "I think I can be more creative and express myself through fashion," she said. "I like to make people feel good about themselves and enjoy seeing their expression when they put on clothing that makes them feel special."

Last week I promised to write more about my visit with Don Lincoln at his Green Street design studio. As you recall, Don showed a sudden spark of independence when he insisted on attending an inner-city high school instead of the private prep school his parents had in mind for him. After graduation from college, he followed family tradition, by attending business school at UCLA and later, accepted a commission as an officer in the Air Force....

The event allows students of Woodbury’s fashion department to showcase their designs. The styles shown made the cut after being judged by fashion professionals during a show on April 20 at the university.

Kmart in Burbank earlier this month invited tweens, teens and their parents to check out its exclusive new lines of back-to-school fashions for families on a budget with all the glitz and glam of a New York designer fashion show. The commentator was Nick Verreos, who has appeared on Bravo's "Project Runway," served as a red carpet fashion expert and gown designer to the stars. The new girls' lines — Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez, Audrina Patridge for Bongo and Rebecca Bonbon — have been added to the racks alongside Route 66 and others.
