Glendale-based International House of Pancakes, or IHOP, this week announced the roll out of new menu items, which include a lineup of dinner options. The items are available nationwide and are a result of extensive research. They include new options for seniors and kids, as well as additional “For Me” selections, which offers guests dishes that are lower in fat, calories or carbohydrates.   Masstech teams up with local company Masstech announced this week that, in conjunction with National TeleConsultants of Glendale, it has completed the commissioning of a large-scale file-based work flow solution for Fox Network Center-Houston, in The Woodlands, Texas.

Robert Shaffer DOWNTOWN -- Amid scaffolding and construction workers, Ross Dress for Less is open in the Fashion Square. The discount clothing store is the first to open in the $70 million shopping center, located six blocks east of downtown on the northwest corner of Glendale and Wilson avenues. Despite the opening of only one store, the mall quickly took on the look of a modern American shopping center. Racks of clothes, long lines and screaming children inside, and cars going too fast in the parking lot. "It's been about this busy all day," said Don Swafford, a security guard diverting traffic away from a closed section of the parking lot. "I don't know where they all come from."

National retailer Marshalls, known primarily for its mid-priced clothing, unveiled its newest store format Thursday, which carries only shoes and handbags. Hundreds of shoppers, heralded by a multimedia advertising blitz, milled about the Marshalls Shoe MegaShop during the grand opening amid the voluminous collection of reduced-price footwear. Glendale resident Luis Briceno, examining a pair of men’s athletic shoes, said he was attracted by the relatively cheap prices he has come to expect from Marshalls, especially in a tight economy.

Broadway: A 25-year-old Los Angeles man reported Wednesday the front passenger window of his car had been shattered while parked in a lot. 345 W. California St.: A 52-year-old North Hollywood man reported Thursday his credit cards were used while he was out of the country. 300 Vallejo Drive: A 45-year-old West Covina woman reported Thursday her purse was stolen after she set it down inside a building.

La Cañada United Methodist Church is supporting two activities to assist an orphanage in Africa. The first is a collection of shoes in all children's sizes that the La Cañada Girl Scout Troop 576 is sending to Machao Orphanage in Kenya, Africa. The Scouts became acquainted with this orphanage through Dr. Carolyn Rowley, a Burbank resident, who has visited there and is helping to provide support. Currently there are 13 resident children, all who lost their parents to AIDS. They walk one and a half hours each way to school six days a week, and also for church on Sunday, with only sandals for footwear.

Buck Wargo CITY HALL -- A full Glendale Fashion Center will open by early summer as scheduled. Vestar Development Co. announced the scheduled has remained intact and that it has commitments for leasing 100% of the the $70-million shopping center that measures 264,000 square feet. Jeanne Armstrong, Glendale's director of the Development Services Department, said she expects some stores, including Ralphs, could open as early as April with others opening in May and June.

Walt Disney pairs up with Payless Shoes The Walt Disney Co. and Payless ShoeSource Inc. made a direct-to-retail agreement on a line of Disney-themed footwear. The shoes will feature popular Disney and Disney Pixar characters. The deal will cut out the licensing middleman and will have the two companies work together on shoe design and retail marketing. In traditional agreements, the company signed deals with licensees, who then sold products to retailers. The new agreement gives Disney more control over its brand.

Kenneth Village to celebrate beautification NORTHWEST GLENDALE -- The Kenneth Village Merchants Assn. will hold a dedication ceremony to celebrate the beautification of the area. The event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 on Kenneth Road, between Sonora and Grandview avenues. The event will celebrate landscaping, lights and a new clock that have helped transform the look of the shopping district. It will include food, music, dancing and children's entertainment.

One tweet led to another and on Wednesday, British business magnate Sir Richard Branson agreed to donate $2,000 to Glendale's winter shelter, which has been hitting its 80-bed capacity nightly despite a bare-bones budget. Branson on Tuesday tweeted that he would donate the money to Ascencia, Glendale's largest homeless services provider and the shelter's operator, if 2,000 people tweeted the word “shoeathon.” They did. And so Branson - through his nonprofit Virgin Unite and phone company Virgin Mobile - made good on his pledge.
