Charles Rich With a squad littered mostly with underclassmen, the La Canada High girls' tennis team netted a huge upside. The Spartans forged it via a mix of freshmen competing successfully on the big stage for the first time in their brief careers, to having a league doubles champion. La Canada had its season come to a close Saturday with an 11-7 loss to visiting Fountain Valley in a CIF Southern Section Division II second-round match at the La Canada Country Club.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL Flintridge Prep 3, Glendale 1: The host Rebels received 19 kills, 13 digs and six aces from Dante Fregoso en route to a 25-10, 25-17, 26-28, 25-13 nonleague win Monday. Aldridge Khin added 38 assists, Trip Westmoreland had 13 kills and Zach Picker collected 16 digs for the Rebels (9-4). Glendale fell to 3-7. SOFTBALL Hart 4, Crescenta Valley 3: Crescenta Valley (5-5) fell Saturday in a Woodbridge Tournament game. Earlier Saturday in a tournament contest, Crescenta Valley dropped a 6-0 decision to Fountain Valley.

Margaret Hardeman---- August 13 th , 1925 to January 15 th , 2011     Margaret Hardeman was born on August 13 th , 1925 in Los Angeles, California to Anthony and Angelina Fido. Margaret attended Burbank High School and then worked for Owl Drugstore and Bakery Lane in Burbank. Margaret married Benjamin Hardeman on September 26 th , 1943 in Burbank, California.  Margaret and Ben had two children, James and Judy, who they raised in Burbank.   Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family which included four grandchildren and four great-grandchilden.

Rio and Rachel Ray have only been leading the Salvation Army Glendale Corps for less than a year, but have already proven that they will continue to uphold the Glendale Corps’ reputation for actively fulfilling the needs of the community. “What I really appreciate about Rio and Rachel is their humility and serving heart,” said Rick White, the Glendale Corps’ director of social services and volunteer coordinator. “Even though they haven’t been here a year yet, they love the community.

GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the area sports scene.   EIGHT LOCALS IN ALL-STAR GAME No less than eight area football players have been selected to play in Friday’s Hall of Fame All-Star football game at Bassett High in La Puente. The Crescenta Valley High trio of center Tanner Farwell , linebacker Parker Haleen and receiver Clay Sierra will be on the West Team, along with the Glendale trio of receiver Zane Archer , linebacker Mario Cruz and lineman Arshak Abramyan . St. Francis defensive back Kyle Morgan and guard Dan Scheper are also members of the squad.

NORTHWEST GLENDALE — A 48-year-old Fountain Valley man was struck and killed on the Ventura (134) Freeway early Tuesday morning after he pulled over, got out of his car and tried to help people involved in a previous crash, authorities said. The fatal accident, which is still under investigation, occurred at about 1 a.m. on the eastbound Ventura Freeway just west of Pacific Avenue when 26-year-old Sara Kacee swerved at a high rate of speed to miss the first wreck, which was blocking the No. 1 and 2 lanes, and hit Kirk Dowling as he walked along the sound wall to offer his assistance, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene. MARTIN HOLDS HIS OWN James Martin , a 2006 Crescenta Valley High graduate and Falcons standout in the pool, held his own this weekend in Mission Viejo at the 2007 TYR Swim Meet of Champions. Swimming the backstroke and representing the Trojans Swim Club, the current USC student took 11th and 14th in the 200-meter backstroke and the 100 backstroke, respectively. On Friday, Martin took 15th in the 200 prelims, finishing in 2 minutes 10.40 seconds.

GLENDALE ? The largest annual junior tennis tournament in the United States is taking place in Fountain Valley and some of the area's best young talent made the trip to compete. Players from all over the Los Angeles area, including Glendale, La Cañada and La Crescenta, are playing in the 105th Annual Southern California Jr. Sectional Championship. Play began on Saturday and will continue on through the upcoming week into the following weekend. Of the local junior players who have competed thus far, four have come out victorious in at least one match.
