LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — According to Sean Beattie, life in the Prep League doesn't figure to be easy this season. The veteran Flintridge Prep girls' volleyball coach drew that conclusion Thursday night after the host Rebels escaped with a league-opening 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 home victory against improved Webb. "There's not going to be any easy matches, and it's going to be tough no matter who you play or when you play somebody," Beattie said shortly after the two-hour match concluded.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE - Whether at even strength or down one player, the Flintridge Prep boys' soccer team generated plenty of quality scoring opportunities Thursday afternoon during its Prep League match against Webb. Flintridge Prep Coach Mathew Bowden couldn't find fault in the effort after watching his players get turned aside with excellent saves by Webb goalkeeper Ian Harbison in the Rebels' 2-0 home loss at the Glendale Sports Complex. "We just couldn't get the goal at the right time," said Bowden, whose team fell to 7-5-1, 3-2 in league and split the two-match season series with Webb (7-7, 2-3)

NORTHEAST GLENDALE - If the Flintridge Prep baseball team plans to contend for a playoff spot, Rebels Coach Buzz Cook said there's one facet that needs to be addressed - shoring up the defense. In Cook's mind, he's looking for it to happen soon before the Rebels fall out of the playoff picture. "We have to learn how to make the routine plays, and it's difficult to be in a comfortable position when you can't make them," Cook said after Flintridge Prep began Prep League play Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 home loss against Webb at the Glendale Sports Complex.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - The Flintridge Prep girls' water polo team ran into a one-man wrecking crew in the form of Webb's Emma Budekin Friday. Budekin scored more than half of her team's goals in a 15-5 Prep League win over the Rebels. Prep Coach Ryan Goto said Budekin, who had a game-high eight goals, was so effective because she had so much more experience. "We just didn't have anybody that could match up with [Budekin] in terms of skill," Goto said. "We have a lot of new players to the sport versus people who have been playing club for years.

GLENDALE - When Flintridge Prep hosted Webb at the Glendale Sports Complex on Thursday, it promised to be a tight baseball game between two Prep league contenders ranked in the top 10 in CIF Southern Section Division VI and the result would be key in a tight league race. To get the result they needed, the Rebels, ranked No. 9 in the division, were tasked with overcoming a Gaul squad ranked No. 2 in the division, yet to lose in league, and riding a 13-game win streak this season in addition to a six-game win streak versus the hosts over the last two seasons.

GLENDALE - Scoring chances were few and far between for both the Flintridge Prep and Webb boys' soccer teams on a rainy Friday at the Glendale Sports Complex. The strong defensive Prep League matchup shifted largely into Webb's favor when it got on the board first in the 12th minute. The game continued to slide more and more to a Gauls win with every minute that ticked off the clock. The Rebels had a last-second answer, though, as their standout midfielder Manny Perez earned a penalty kick in the 80th minute and converted it to end the contest at a 1-1 tie. “We tried to take advantage of every chance we had and in the end we did and scored a goal,” Perez said.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - The Flintridge Prep girls' basketball team could have folded when Webb scored eight straight points to cut a 10-point deficit to two early in the fourth quarter. Instead, the Rebels responded with a run of their own to pull out a 38-29 Prep League victory at home Tuesday night. Prep Coach Todd Frost said the key to the win was not getting rattled. "In that fourth quarter when it got close, they could have freaked out, gotten nervous and played scared, but they didn't," Frost said.

PASADENA — With the tacit threat of having its near two-decade long Prep League title streak snapped, the Pasadena Poly baseball team proved downright threatening Tuesday afternoon. The host Panthers won their 11th straight contest behind a 13-hit attack from their offense and tough pitching from ace Chris Ward in defeating Webb, 10-0, in six innings in league play. Poly (15-5 overall, 9-2 in league), ranked sixth in Division VI, is now tied with No. 4 Webb (19-4, 9-2) atop the league standings and can clinch its 17th straight league title and the league's top seed, via a 2-1 series victory over Webb, with a triumph Friday versus visiting Rio Hondo Prep at 3:30 p.m. "What you're seeing now is a team playing its best baseball," Pasadena Poly Coach Wayne Ellis said.

LA CAÑADA - Whether or not Tuesday afternoon's Prep League boys' water polo contest marked the final home match this year for Flintridge Prep remains to be seen. What the CIF Southern Section Division V ninth-ranked Rebels did ensure, however, is that they treated the match as such, playing stout defense en route to an impressive 19-11 victory over seventh-ranked Webb in the regular-season home finale. “Regardless of where we go in CIF, this was our last home game before playoffs,” Rebels Coach Dan Hare said.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - While the Flintridge Prep boys' water polo team got off to a great start in nonleague play this year, the Rebels realized all that really mattered was the Prep League season. Prep's theme of starting slowly in nonleague carried over to its league opener against visiting Webb Tuesday, but the Rebels' ability to dominate fourth quarters continued, as well, in a 20-13 victory over the Gauls. "That's a team that has had our number," said Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare of Webb, which Prep hadn't defeated in four years.

GLENDALE - There wasn't much concern on the part of the players of the Flintridge Prep baseball team when they fell behind in the early innings Monday in their Prep League opener against Webb. Although the Gauls scored all their runs as a result of Rebels' miscues, the players didn't panic. "With all of us captains, we kind of emphasize that we don't want to let early problems like that affect us," Flintridge Prep senior starting pitcher Brendan McKiernan said. "We knew it was early in the game and we knew we could come back with all of the good hitters we have on the team.

LA CA¿ADA - Coming into Tuesday afternoon's Prep League boys' soccer match against Webb, Flintridge Prep was one of four league teams still in contention for the league championship. However, the Rebels coaches and players realized that a loss at this point in the season could derail the team's title aspirations. Flintridge Prep didn't help its cause by falling behind in the contest's opening minutes. But the Rebels were able to recover, scoring a goal of their own in the first half to salvage a 1-1 tie against the Gauls at home.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE - There was much fanfare Thursday afternoon at Occidental College's Anderson Field. The winner of the Prep League finale between Webb and Flintridge Prep had a postgame celebration that included a Gatorade bath for the coach and a parent playing "Eye of the Tiger" on a bugle as teammates high-fived one another. But in a moment that could have been celebratory for Flintridge Prep Coach Buzz Cook, Cook instead was more reflective as he watched the events that unfolded across the field.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Pasadena Poly boys' volleyball Coach Mark Mina admitted his team probably showed up at Flintridge Prep expecting a Prep League sweep on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers almost got one. Performed on them, that is, by a Rebels squad that became ever more fired up with wins in the first two games and taking the third down to the wire. Michael Saeta simply wouldn't allow Poly to go down, however, igniting a late rally to win the third game before going on to finish with 51 kills in his team's 21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13 win that lifted the Panthers into a tie for first place with Chadwick with two matches left in the season.
