Early in his career, two personal goals Burnie set were to be a motor officer and a member of the Air Support Unit. He achieved his first goal in 1989, when he was assigned to Traffic Division - Motors. He quickly developed into an exceptional motor officer. He became one of the top producers in arrests, citations and reports. During his 11 years in the traffic division, he was often looked to as one of the most experienced motor officers in the bureau. He developed into an expert traffic accident investigator, and later served as the acting lead accident investigator for the Traffic Division.

June S. Hissey Beloved mother of Cathy and Jim Hissey, grandmother of Rachel, Adam and Jacob Hissey, and sister of Herbert Hansen, passed away peacefully at Glendale Adventist Hospital on July 19, 2012. She was 88. A Memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on July 21, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale, located at 134 N. Kenwood (at the corner of Broadway), in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Project Angel Food, 922 Vine Street, Los Angeles, CA 90038.

Music comes to La Canada Flintridge The city of La Canada Flintridge, in conjunction with the La Canada Valley Sun, will host light rock band PCH at the second installment of the Music in the Park concert series from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the La Canada Flintridge Memorial Park. Music in the Park concerts are held every Sunday throughout the summer and feature bands performing a variety of musical genres. Families are welcome to bring picnic meals to the park.

Alex Coolman SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- A driver who allegedly made the mistake of stepping on the gas pedal rather than the brake drove her car through the window of Foster's Donuts on East Colorado Street Thursday, injuring a customer and the shop's owner. The accident took place shortly before 9 a.m. The victims were taken to Glendale Adventist Hospital, firefighters said. Frequent News-Press letter writer Paul Carney was the injured customer.

A 56-year-old Glendale man is recovering from a gun shot wound after being robbed at gun point in his garage in the 900 block of Penshore Terrace in northeast Glendale. According Glendale Police Officer John Balian, the man arrived at his home at almost 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1 after parking his vehicle in the garage when he was accosted by two men in their mid-20s. "One shot him in the leg, demanding money and jewelry," Balian said. "The suspects took the money and got into a waiting vehicle."

Tatevik Mirzakhanyan of Clark Magnet School and Holly Stevens of Crescenta Valley High School were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the National Charity League, Inc. Glendale Chapter at the organization?s annual meeting at Oakmont Country Club. Mirzakhanyan will be attending UCLA next fall, majoring in global studies and English. She is a long term volunteer for the Glendale Adventist Hospital, Glendale Rose Float Association and the Pacific Branch Library. She is also treasurer of the Armenian Club and an accomplished writer, serving as the editor-in-chief of Clark Magnet School?

For a long time I've had the feeling that Glendale's government is being blackmailed. And as everyone knows, giving in to blackmail never ends it. They will always ask for more. Today it's Leslie Eppick's job, tomorrow yours. The Glendale Humane Society has a board of 10 members, but Leslie Eppick is singled out. Tanveer Hussain D.V.M. is one of the directors of the board. As a veterinarian, he would have noticed abuse, wounds, broken bones, poor nutrition.

Suspect surrenders in home burglary NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- A Glendale man was arrested on suspicion of burglary after a homeowner found him hiding in her closet, police said. Louis Miguel Jaldin, 20, was arrested about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1300 block of Winchester Avenue. When a 46-year-old woman returned to her home to straighten up the clutter in her grandson's room before her cleaning crew arrived, Jaldin came out of the bedroom closet he was hiding in and told her, "I need help," according to police reports.

Glendale’s honorees are: Demetria Graves, a family law attorney; Margarit Mardirosian, a personal injury attorney; Candace Metzger and Mindy Allen, artists and part-owners of Gallery Ophelia, a fine arts company; Juanita Wells, a women’s health coordinator at Kaiser Permanente; Denise Miller, an outpatient coordinator for occupational therapy at Glendale Adventist Hospital; Rubina Matevosian, a station personality on Jaam-E-Jam Persian television; Margy Feldman, president and chief executive officer for the Jewish Big Brothers Big Sister, Camp Max Strauss; and Debbie Kukta, chief executive officer for Trojan Rivet Corp.

Members of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station and the community are mourning the sudden loss of Deputy Mike Carney. Carney, 34, died of an apparent heart attack on Friday evening at his home in San Bernardino. “There was no warning,” said Sgt. Randy Sulstrom of the Crescenta Valley station. “No history of heart problems that we had heard of.” Carney had complained of not feeling well on Wednesday while at the Crescenta Valley station.

GLENDALE— A registered nurse training partnership between San Diego State University and Glendale Adventist Hospital is accepting applicants, providing area residents with another entry point into the health-care field, officials said. The 2-year-old program, which launches locally this summer, begins with online instruction and ends with students working with patients at Glendale Adventist. The 12-month program culminates with a bachelor’s degree in science, giving students an advantage in the job market, officials said.

NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS The National Charity League Inc. Glendale Chapter presented seven scholarships at the organization’s Annual Meeting at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Those receiving $1,000 scholarships were Tatevik Mirzakhanvan of Clark Magnet School, Holly Stevens of Crescenta Valley High School, Gohar Khechumyan of Glendale High School, Amy Drummond of Hoover High School and Joy Hernandez and Ankin Boghos of Glendale Community College.

Jack Sutz, a 67-year-old New York native, is a volunteer escort at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, spending his Wednesdays wheeling around patients and making sure he does his doing his part to help out. Sutz, who has lived in Glendale for 18 years, retired from the healthcare industry but couldn’t sit still at home. Knowing the importance of healthy living, he just had one demand of any volunteer work — he wanted to make sure his job averaged 5 miles of walking a day.   As a hospital escort, you are a patient’s first and last impression at Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

Sandra Schultz is active in improving the lives of disadvantaged women at home and around the world. For 23 years, she has staked a presence in the Glendale chapter of Soroptimist International, a worldwide volunteer organization composed of 95,000 professional women helping the lives of disadvantaged women in 120 countries and territories, she said. Her involvement is both local and international, including activity in local fundraisers such as “Bras for a Cause,” and trips to China and Rwanda to help women develop practical skill sets.

  Cañada Boulevard in Glendale, several tools were stolen from a shed in the 2200 block during the day on Tuesday. Hermosita Drive in Glendale, the rear windshield of a vehicle was shattered over night on Tuesday. La Crescenta Avenue in La Cresenta, while a gardener was working in the front yard of the home he was called briefly to the backyard leaving a chainsaw in the home’s driveway. When he returned the chainsaw was gone; a witness observed two men described as Hispanic drive up to the home and stop.
