Karen S. Kim NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- An arm of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Charitable Foundation will honor one of its own Wednesday at an annual recognition and appreciation luncheon. The foundation's Oak Society, a group of hospital employees, physicians, business leaders and community leaders who support the hospital through membership dues and private contributions, will honor longtime Glendale resident Georgia Abelmann with the "Spirit of Giving" award.

Buck Wargo GLENDALE ADVENTIST -- Glendale skies will be filled with bubbles today. Glendale Adventist Medical Center is inviting kindergarten classes from local schools to kick off the "Week of the Young Child" by blowing bubbles into the air. The event is at 10 a.m. in the Pediatric Therapy Center, 1502 Chevy Chase Drive. The national celebration sponsored by the National Assn. for the Education of Young Children calls for parents, teachers, business leaders and the public to recognize the early childhood years for setting a foundation for children.

Claudia Peschiutta GLENDALE ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER -- She has been called a visiting angel, compared to a fine, imported cheese and complimented on everything from her knowledge of medical issues to her ability to improve the morale of her co-workers. Agnes Pagdilao, head nurse of the hospital's Pulmonary/Oncology Unit, was recently elected Nurse of the Year by her peers. The 51-year-old Walnut resident has been working at Glendale Adventist since 1978.

The Healthcare Foundation at Glendale Adventist Medical Center will have its annual fundraising gala at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Glendale, 100 W. Glenoaks Blvd. Funds raised from the event go toward the purchase of new hospital equipment and an X-ray room. Headlining the gala will be Deborah Gibson, now a Broadway performer, but who broke into the pop music scene as a teen with hits like "Only in My Dreams" and "Foolish Beat." Also performing is Justin Bahrami, a local flutist.

Claudia Peschiutta GLENDALE ADVENTIST MEDICAL CENTER -- The doctor will soon be in. Obstetrician Barry S. Schifrin is set to join the medical center staff as director of the OB/GYN Residency Program on Nov. 1. Schifrin is a specialist in maternal fetal medicine and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. "We are delighted to have Dr. Schifrin," Fred Manchur, president and chief executive officer of the center, said in a statement.

Many of us have been waiting to hear what is going to happen with Verdugo Hills Hospital and we finally have our answer (“Verdugo Hills talks merger,” July 25). I am sure that the members of the board of directors have given a lot of thought to make the decision to join USC. Glendale Adventist Medical Center would have swallowed us up. Verdugo Hills Hospital is the best. My husband and I have always had the best of personal care. Let's hope it will stay small and personal. Patricia Tarallo La Crescenta

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos presented a check to Glendale Adventist Medical Center for $15,000 for the purchase of a “giraffe omnibed” for the hospital’s natal intensive care unit Dec. 22. The presentation took place in the Maternity Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. Omnibeds essentially provide a heated healing environment for intensively ill infants. Client development campaign launched Milton & DeKruif, a Glendale-based law firm, announced it has kicked off a new client development campaign in order to raise market visibility in front of new and existing clients.
